About the Item
Silvia De Marchi (b. 1967, Melzo, Italy) is an Italian painter currently based in Italy and represented by the Grège Gallery. Her artistic practice reflects a deep exploration of materiality and sensory experience, moving beyond mere visual representation to engage with the physical and tactile aspects of painting. Silvia's work focuses on the interplay between surface textures and the deeper levels of meaning that can be contained within, investigating themes of fullness and emptiness, visibility and invisibility, and presence and absence.
Silvia’s creative process begins with painting large sheets of Fabriano paper using a watery mixed media ink that includes iron powder, sand, silver powder, and sometimes dust or plaster. This technique results in monochromatic surfaces rich with textures and imperfections. The paper is then subjected to the effects of natural elements (sun, wind, and rain) allowing the material to undergo transformation through wear and tear. This process of deterioration and imperfection is central to her practice, embodying both the fragility and resilience of materials over time. Following this, Silvia tears or cuts the paper into pieces, which are then assembled into multilayered compositions. These works of art evoke a sense of construction and deconstruction, subtly revealing or concealing underlying structures.
Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, Silvia embraces the ephemeral nature of existence and finds beauty in imperfection and simplicity. Her works invite viewers to reflect on the transient quality of materials and the enduring value of time, offering a profound sensory and philosophical experience.
Her art has been exhibited in venues across Italy and around the world, and his unique approach to materiality and process has been recognized both locally and internationally.

Silvia De Marchi, born in 1967, is a painter based in Arosio, a small city nestled between Milano and Como in Northern Italy. Her artistic practice draws emotional inspiration from the past, materiality, archaeology, and antiquity. Silvia derives creative influence from mountain landscapes, poetry, music, and cinema. Having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Como with a specialization in the restoration of paintings on canvas and wood, as well as at the Botticino-Brescia Regional School focusing on frescoes and stone materials, Silvia has a rich background in art restoration. For over two decades, she has worked as a restorer of paintings, frescoes, and stone materials while concurrently pursuing her personal artistic exploration. Silvia has showcased her works in various exhibitions, including the solo exhibition "Merci de ne pas toucher" at the M21 Gallery in Knokke, Belgium in 2021, and group exhibitions across Italy, Europe, and the USA. In her artistic endeavors, Silvia is captivated by the material world. Through decay and weathering, she perceives both the fragility and resilience of matter over time. Her artistic quest delves into the weight of memory within materials, reflecting the transience, fragility, and enduring nature of life and cultural artifacts. Silvia's creative inspiration lies in exploring the interplay of construction and destruction, focusing on the remnants and a poetic interpretation of time, ruins, and fragments. The material itself reveals mysteries and guides her in uncovering hidden narratives. She is intrigued by the viewer's response to weathered surfaces and the communication of physicality and substance over time. Silvia seeks to evoke sensations through imperfect matter, unfinished forms, invisible elements, and excavations into the depth of materials. Central to her artistic ethos is the principle of the Chinese concept of effectiveness, rooted in Buddhist philosophy. This principle emphasizes the ability to cultivate natural transformations in painting, allowing gestures to unfold spontaneously without imposition. Silvia values the harmony with natural rhythms to achieve authentic and effective artistic expression, considering the essence of beauty in painting as embracing naturalness and spontaneity. Through painting, Silvia finds a means to engage with and measure the passage of time in a profound and contemplative manner.

Artist Biography:
Mark A. Lembo Script M Abstract Art Mark’s dynamic work blurs the distinction between alcohol ink and watercolor - working with dyes, inks, liquid acrylic, liquid watercolor, and other aqueous media; lately, he has been incorporating metallic watercolor and pearlescent ink to his work. He has used canvas, synthetic Yupo™ paper, Yasutomo Mineral Paper, and various watercolor papers. Mark’s journey into the world of creative arts started with the question, “What would Jackson Pollock’s work look like if he had used transparent watercolors?” So, it was out with the pencils, pens, and brushes, and on to the pouring of various aqueous solutions. While mostly self-taught, Mark took a series of classes at the Creative Arts Group, Sierra Madre, CA, under Joe Stoddard, as well as seminars with Robert Burridge...

Looking For Tomorrow

The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow.
He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle.
Wittmann loves signs as they leave room for interpretation. For instance, if one writes “the sky
is blue”, one will make for themself a mental representation of a blue sky, even if each one-off us
will probably have some nuance in our own mental representation of that blue sky. On the other hand, a sign can...
