About the Item
Memoire of a Moment by Stanley Boxer, 1996. Oil and mixed media on canvas, 50.5 x 60.5 inches. This mixed media work has an active surface that is thickly painted, with defined brush strokes in a pastel palette of pink, light blue, pale yellow, and peach. Several three dimensional sculptural formations, scattered glitter and other features add depth to the painting.
Stanley Boxer was born in New York City. He was best known for his thickly painted abstract works of art. He was also an accomplished sculptor and printmaker. His work was recognized by art critic Clement Greenberg, who categorized him as a color field painter; The titles of his work were verbal attempts to capture the movement and gestures in his works.
Boxer had a highly successful, 40 year career, and is included in numerous important public and private collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Guggenheim Museum.
