Collage work of art by Susan Hensel.
Hensel was awarded a residency at Virginia Center for Creative Arts in 2021 to create a body of works on paper that relate to a her series of sculpture. The series, ultimately, was named Neotectonic Period. The artist has been fascinated with tectonic plates since she was a child, growing up in the Finger Lakes of New York, where you can see the action of time in every hillside. Beneath all that sedimentary action, was the pressure of the sliding plates.
Susan Hensel is a multidisciplinary artist, who combines a mixed media practice with embroidery across digital and manual platforms. Susan received her BFA from the University of Michigan with a double major in painting and sculpture and a concentration in ceramics. With a history, to date, of over 200 exhibitions, more than 30 of them solo, twenty garnering awards. Hensel’s artwork is known and collected nationwide, represented in collecting libraries and museums.
