About the Item
"The Clock is Ticking"
64X58 inches
Oil, acrylic and spray paint on canvas
Large scale painting influenced by abstract expressionism and urban art and graffiti. Blue, green, yellow, red and white color scheme create a warm and inviting work that will lighten and provide dimension to any space.
Taher Jaoui (b.1978) is a French Neo-Abstract Expressionist painter, who was born in Tunisia and currently works in Germany. Jaoui graduated from the world-renowned Sorbonne University in Paris in 2007, where he studied Mathematics and Engineering. This education continues to inform Jaoui’s compositions which blend formulas and calculations with abstract forms and colors. Along with his personal experiences, Jaoui’s inspiration comes from many sources, including abstract expressionism, cartoons, graffiti, street art, and primitivism.
Jaoui’s work mixes painting and drawing in ways that are both abstract and figurative. His colorful compositions stimulate the viewers’ feelings and imagination, allowing them to build their own interpretations. Without any formal art education, his artistic practice is influenced by African art, graffiti, glitch art, the COBRA art movement, as well as the philosophy and attitude of post-war abstract expressionism from the 50s and 60s. Varying from simple patterns to chalkboard-like scribble sections, the canvas surface becomes the workspace through which the artist exercises his ways of expression.
The artist’s work combines a full palette of color and texture, using oil, enamel, spray paint and charcoal on raw canvas. Through laborious layering and reworking of the compositions, Jaoui constructs a visceral experience that directly captures the physical energy put into each piece. They are rich assemblages of layered forms, vibrant colors, expressive gestures, and mathematics signs and formulas. Serving as a channel to convey his thoughts, emotions, and visions, the artistic practice is Jaoui's source of confidence and peace, while the finished work becomes a documentation of the process of achieving those feelings.

A colorful collage by James Verbicky. Composed of a variety of materials that create an eclectic, multi-dimensional, and thought provoking artwork.
James Verbicky (b. 1973) is a contemporary painter and mixed media artist who lived the majority of his early life in British Columbia before immigrating to the United States in the early 2000s. He struggled with legal status for many years before finally being awarded the ‘Extraordinary Ability’ Green card due to his extensive involvement with a wide range of museums, galleries, publications, nonprofit organizations, and philanthropic endeavors. In 2008, his work was selected for a 110 year-old juried exhibition at the Louvre with the Societie Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Shortly after his exhibition in Paris, James found inspiration among the magazine vendors along the Seine, Verbicky at which point he began creating media paintings. These complex and sculptural mixed media artworks became his vessels for communicating about a society oversaturated by media. By utilizing rare historical content, including both obsolete and persisting brands and advertisements, as well as vintage graphics...

Youssef Sida
1922-1994
Born in 1922 in Damietta, and in 1945 he got his degree from the Higher Institute of Educational Art. In 1947, he participated in establishing the influential Group of Modern Art. In 1949 he participated in the Egyptian exhibition in Paris. In 1950, he received the Full Bright award for studying art at Minnesota University. He then studied at Colombia University in NY and began exhibiting his work in NY and Minnesota from 1951-1952. He participated in 1953 in the Biennale of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Upon returning to Egypt in 1954, he became active in local and international exhibitions. In 1961, he was sent by the Egyptian government to receive his Ph.D. from Columbus University, Ohio. After, he started exhibiting his work in Columbus and Washington DC.
Y.Sida’s work at the start was mainly dealing with popular Egyptian themes. We can distinguish Sida’s work through his power of using primary colors in its purest form directly in the tubes without being mixed with other colors. Also, we can notice in his work a tendency towards the qualities and techniques of children’s art.
In his later years, Sida began experimenting with Arabic Calligraphy by concentrating on the forms and shapes that are dominant in the popular Egyptian motives and décor. We can witness the dynamism in his Arabic calligraphy work. Sida is also known for his huge murals...
