The two burnt matches represent the fact that sometimes in life, you strike it lucky and meet your perfect match. Strike a Happy Medium playfully merges pop culture nostalgia with everyday design. Presented as a large, collectable matchbox, the work features a vibrant turquoise background covered with bold, acid-house-inspired yellow smiley faces — an instantly recognisable symbol of 1990s rave culture and collective joy. Sliding the box open reveals oversized wooden matches, each hand-painted, some blackened to evoke a sense of use and impermanence.
TBOY uses this deceptively simple format to explore themes of optimism, energy, and cultural memory — suggesting that joy, like a match, can be struck, shared, and eventually burn out. Equal parts sculpture, multiple, and design object, Strike a Happy Medium embodies TBOY’s signature blend of humour, pop iconography, and craftsmanship.
Bio:
TBOY is a UK-based contemporary artist whose vibrant, concept-driven works fuse pop iconography, nostalgia and meticulous craftsmanship. Initially trained in Fine Art at Worthing College of Art and Design, he transitioned into 3D design before completing an apprenticeship in bespoke frame-making and colour finishing—skills that now define the precision and polish of his practice. Influenced by music, gaming culture, iconic figures and pivotal historical moments, TBOY creates unique originals and limited editions that blend humour with cultural commentary. His work has been exhibited in London, Manchester, Brighton and New York
