About the Item

Tobi C is a white, non-binary artist who grew up in San Diego and calls Columbia, Missouri home. Tobi holds a BA in both Structural Violence and Gender Studies from the Metropolitan University of Denver and recently completed a term at Columbia’s Resident Arts. For this body of work, Tobi found inspiration in the words of artists and theorists of color who call upon white people to employ a critical lens and look inward in order to address issues of racist ideology without indulging in the trappings of white guilt, fragility, intent, or denial. Finger-blended oil pastel, ink, and acrylic on stark backgrounds make up large scale compositions that balance qualities of illustration and realism. While the work is thoroughly conceptually imagined, it also holds evidence of a process embracing tension, rawness and vulnerability that is at once academic and intuitive.

The Earth’s diverse surface is fascinating. The vegetative environments invite viewers to visit a place. Local light and atmosphere affect the plant life that thrives, the colors we see and experience of mood and energy. These botanical paintings explore memory and landscape with complex spatial environments that hover between painterly realism and abstract passages. Throughout the long tradition of landscape painting, there exists a connection between the artist and the natural world. A painter can evoke this relationship through the use of color, value and line whether the painting is representational or abstracted. These elements combine and intertwine to create rhythms of perspective and dimension, illuminating this personal vision on canvas. Yupo paper is waterproof, and stands up to the rigors of the elements and demanding environments. Ultra-smooth and bright white, it's a paper alternative that stands out. Bio Julie...

Four Lotus, Original Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Guigen Zha presents a quadriptych of pink lotuses in varying positions and stages of growth. He creates an eye-catching contrast by realistically painting the flowers over the abstract gradient background. Guigen collages the subject to perfectly integrate the three expressive painting techniques into the composition. "It can also be hung separately as four individual pictures of the lotus," says Guigen.
