About the Item
Mixed media collage by Tomo Mori.
Tomo Mori is a Japanese-born artist living in New York City. Her work has been exhibited in Scope Miami, Flux Art Fair, Rush Art, Gallery Aferro, and Laundromat Project. Her passion for public art landed on commissions from the MTA in 2018, Columbia University in 2016, and Governors Island in 2019.
The artist restores her inner balance by an almost ritual-like creative process, praying to heal and reconnect the world broken in so many places. Mori's art reflects the themes of human connections. Her collages employs mosaic-like techniques but using paint and fabrics. Hundreds of squares reminiscent of digital pixels compose an aggregate like a living organism, together representing our time's harmony and history. They focus on the beauty and complexity of multiculturalism and our ancestors' journeys. Imagining their sacrifices reminds us that our lives are miracles.

Tomo Mori
Born in Osaka, Japan, Tomo Mori received a BFA from Atlanta College of Art, and worked for an international news agency for 11 years after graduation. As a graphic designer she supported top journalists covering news from all over the world 24/7. This experience of seeing the world from a newsroom perspective planted seeds for her missions as an artist today. Mori’s work focuses on the interconnectedness and healing in the space where we experience many conflicts and struggles. As a first-generation immigrant and a mother with inconsistent access to separate studio space, she has learned to integrate her creative life with her cultural heritage and domestic existence, blurring the lines between different aspects of her identity as a woman. Mori has exhibited her works in various galleries, from local community venues to international events like SCOPE Miami. She also has a strong passion for public art installations. She was given diverse commissions from the MTA Arts and Design in 2018 and Columbia University in 2016. She has created a mural for Governors Island as a part of a 2019 summer program. Most recently she completed work on a corporate commission for Swan Reserve Hotel in Orlando, FL.

If the Two Realities Are Thus Brought Together
By Jessica Houston
Located in Montreal, Quebec
A group of figures heads for icy distant mountains. A familiar enough scene of polar explorers hauling their sledges. Yet somehow this does not quite fit the heroic mold. The ice and sky are tinged a movie musical pale blue and their gear is a bit too colorful for the era of man-hauling. And then there’s the sled, piled high not with boxes of supplies but with a jumbled heap of antiquities: Greek Athenas, bits of a coliseum, a ship’s great wheel. In Jessica Houston’s collage “The Long Haul,” the explorers drag history itself into the great beyond, their backs turned from their absurd load. But we take in the entire scene.
In her suite of works, Over the Edge of the World, Houston uses oil on wood, ink on paper, and collages of found images, many from National Geographic Magazine, to rearrange the evidence – and thus history’s possibilities.
Houston joins visual artists such as Judit Hersko, Katja Aglert, and Isaac Julien...
