About the Item

"Mustard Wall Phone" is an original piece by Ulla-Stina Wikander that can be wall-mounted or be free standing. This piece is made from sourced vintage needlepoint embroidery and expertly wrapping it on and around a classic phone cradle with receiver. This piece measures approx. 8.5”h x 5”w x 6”d and ships with gallery-issued Certificate of Authenticity. Ulla-Stina Wikander was born in 1957 and raised in Gothenburg. She is currently living in Kullavik/Stockholm, Sweden and has been working as an artist since 1986. For over 15 years she has collected cross stitch embroidery, and today has a big collection with over 100 different designs. These embroideries have been made by women and are often seen as kitsch and regarded pretty worthless. Wikander has mixed feelings for them, sometimes they are very beautiful and she wants to bring them back to life. In 2012 she started to cover ordinary household items from the 70s, like a vacuum cleaner, sewing machine, electric mixer, etc. She finds it interesting to see how these objects transform in a new context; the obsolet, the things we do not want any longer, the old and forgotten things. They become artifacts from a bygone era, disguised, camouflaged and dressed. Wikander gives them a second life and although she cuts the embroideries into pieces, thinks of them as new, and dressed up. She visits flea markets and vintage stores to find cross stitch embroidery and the objects to work with. Some of the small objects, like an iron or a phone take her a day or two to make, but the bigger installations takes weeks to finish. Over the last few years she has been invited to different exhibitions.

"Junk Drawer" paper collage, hand-embroidery, rubber band ball, french knot
By Kelly Kozma
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This piece titled "Junk Drawer" is an original artwork made from collage, hand embroidery, and latex paint on canvas by Kelly Kozma. This piece is shipped in the pictured white frame and measures 6"h x 6"w framed. The catalyst for this new body of work was a jar of leftover magazine cutouts from a collage I made in 2010. Reusing leftover materials as well repurposing items that might end up thrown away, has become a very important part of my process the past decade. Stumbling across this jar of coin sized images that had waited patiently on a shelf for 12 years, ignited my creative process and drove me to explore collage in a new way. Unlike the piece from 2010 in which I assembled the images by piecing them together, I decided to examine each individual cut out on its on. By removing the image from any other context it allows you to focus solely on its meaning, purpose or feelings that it may evoke. Each image is embedded in a field of French knots which felt like a way of creating a time capsule of sorts for the object. Another inspiration behind this collection is my six year old son and his endless piles of sticks, stones, leaves, etc in our home. Only to him they aren’t sticks and stones, they are treasures. His ability to find a tiny twig or scrap of paper and not only cherish it but give it a backstory of why it is so special, is a beautiful thing and one I have tried to tap into with my new work. By placing a picture of a rubberband ball or a set of Dracula teeth or a banana in this embroidered box...
