About the Item
Pink and Black Sunflower 3
18" x 7" x 7"
Venetian cobalt glass, black-out glass, neon gas, transformer
A hand-made ceiling-hung sculptural neon light by artist Caroline LaCava. This sunflower optical illusion is made with Venetian cobalt blue glass and pumped with classic red neon gas, creating a beautiful color pink for the petals. The stem is made out of "black-out glass", which is opaque, but transparent enough for the neon gas to shine through. This combination creates a dim burgundy color that is easy on the eyes. The artist pushes the boundaries of traditional neon signage by creating illusions where the ideal vantage point can only be viewed from a certain angle. It appears to be an abstract linear structure from one side, but familiar imagery appears as you orbit the sculpture.
Caroline LaCava (b. Glen Cove, NY 1997) is a New York City-based artist who displays her neon in ways that contradict traditional signage. She felt straddled between her interest in 2D and 3D mediums until she was introduced to glass at The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. After graduating with her BFA in 2019, she delved deeper into the technicalities of bending glass while working in production sign shops in NYC. She has since spent most of her time using those skills to execute a new body of sculptural work.
Caroline makes her contour line drawings come to life when she enters the neon shop. Playing with line and perspective enables her to show multiple images through a single glass tube. She finds a thrill in not being what people perceive her to be, leading her to explore optical illusion in her work. Creating double image through glass requires constant trial and error, which Caroline relates to her lived experience as someone who is frequently reinventing herself.

Picadas creates photographs and video installations of places, situations and architecture that not only reveal their inner essence but also hint at dark unknown recesses. By partially stripping away the surface features of an image, the artist unearths visions that give rise to both a secret countenance and a psychic inner landscape. The artist explains, “In my photographs I examine and reveal the ways in which one can freeze both space and time by re-contextualizing different parts of reality and recombining them in new ways. The result is that both objects, and even situations, can be transformed into a kind of sculpture, providing us access to new knowledge about the nature of our reality.” The current works on view include photographs from Costas Picadas...
