About the Item
Centered in this 20th-century assemblage of anthropological and natural elements is a clay representation of the face of a warrior wearing an Aztec eagle mask. Historically, an actual mask featured a prominent open beak and was arrayed in eagle feathers. It was worn for ceremonial military events during the 14th century AD, as it was expected to confer the strength symbolic of the eagle on the wearer.
Naturally, no fighter can proceed into battle without their equipment. The creator of this composition has artfully circled the mask piece with an array of arrowheads and notched and stemmed black projectile points, often used with spear throwers—any of which might, in an expert’s eye, date back as far as the Late Prehistoric Period, from approximately 500 to 1300 AD. A few broken bits of possibly-Pre-Columbian pottery shards further suggest time and place. And while the seashells know no timeline, along with the pierced beads, they were sometimes prized inland and used as currency for trade. In a sense, this is a respectful tribute to a once-mighty empire condensed within a single wood frame.
