Vincent Pomilio
Bar-Code: Horizontal Mixed Media Painting with Colorful Vertical Striped Pattern

2015

About the Item

18 x 24 x 1.5 inches acrylic, pigmented plaster, wax and marble dust on canvas Pomilio's uniquely harmonious color combinations take center stage in his mixed media compositions that employ wax, acrylic, pigmented plaster, and marble dust expertly applied to a wood panel. For the past 15 years, his work has been largely abstract, always using the Natural World as his guide. The image evolves through a series of layers, each one rubbed, sanded, or burnished with tools. The image then reveals itself and he intuitively know when to bring it to completion. Some of Pomilio's work has a strong landscape feeling as in "Between The River and The Sky". The viewer is encouraged to find recognizable shapes and images in my work. Most of these paintings have an all-over feeling as if these self-organizing systems continue off the picture plane. One shape flows from another, and then another, until there is a pulsating energy of interacting elements. Worlds of refined, chaotic movement are animated by color. "Bar-Code" is a wonderful example of the artist's use of color palette juxtaposed as vertical stripes. notes from the artist: With these paintings I explore a means of finding composition, balance and harmony out of a chaotic and intuitive approach to applying paint to the surface. Color is a major component of these abstract works and I am looking for unexpected color relationships. Starting out with a grid, I proceed to de-construct it. Although abstract in nature, there are always elements of the real world and, if you see something, it is there. If my hand intuitively applies material to the surface as if it were operating on its own with bursts of energy, I know it has been a good day. In the end, the challenge is to know when to stop. One thing leads to another and another and so forth and so on, turning the piece a quarter turn throughout the working process until there is nothing I could do to make it any better. It’s time to let it rest and eventually allow the viewer to explore the depths of these excavations. Vincent Pomilio
