About the Item
"This is not a Magritte II" is an original mixed media artwork by Volker Kuhn. The work is hand-signed by the artist below the artwork on the mat. It is created as an edition. It is a witty reference to a painting of famous surrealist artist Magritte formed as a hand-made assemblage carved out and painted with painstaking accuracy yet with a lightness of touch by the artist. 29 x 25 cm framed in a silvery wood-framing with simple hanging mechanism on back. Stamp certified on back.
Since 1986 Volker Kuhn combines his inexhaustible creativity and his motto "just create it" into art objects: Snapshots on little stages, that put a smile on the viewer's faces. These three-dimensional masterpieces display, perhaps with a little smirk, the scenes of life that we encounter from time to time or showcases homages to great works of art. Volker Kuhns picture language is universally comprehensible, which is one of many reasons why his art has garnered international acclaim. His works are carved out by hand and painted with painstaking accuracy yet with a lightness of touch. As it is, this art in boxes is art to go: unique art collector's items from a collector's hands, whose common denominator is their focus on the pure experience of the thing-in-itself which, entering a contrastive or even antithetical relationship to the symbolic OTHER, develops a strong semantic relationship previously unperceived. Thus exploited to their utmost potential, the showcase scenes always cut right to the chase, they mostly hit the mark, and sometimes they may strike a nerve.
But more than this: They're fun. Both that is for you to find out...

Volker Kuhn
German artist Volker Kuhn was born in 1948 and studied Sculpture at the Bremen Academy of Arts, where he was honoured with the Young Advancement Award, given by the Bremen Senate.
He is well known for his series of ‘Art in Boxes’ three-dimensional wall pieces populated by small "findings", miniature figures and animals. His sculptures are informed by ‘object art’ and the work of assemblage artist Joseph Cornwell. References to Dada, Surrealist and Pop Art can also be identified within his vibrant and humorous wall sculptures. His assemblages are framed as pictures and arranged in boxes like tiny stage sets or tableaux. Kuhn's works are unique, skilfully crafted and imaginative.
