About the Item

This is a superb Autograph Letter Signed by Alfred Cortot to the Countess Pecci- Blunt. Paris, December 21st 1936. In French. One page, double-sided. On letterhead paper "alf. Cortot -79. Avenue Henri-Martin". In perfect condition, original envelope included. Perfectly readable. Greeting letter written by the French pianist to the great "Madame", the Countess Anna Laetitia Pecci Blunt, best-known as "Mimì". A volcanic woman called artists from all over the world and organised literary presentations by writers like Cecchi, Moravia, Montale, lectures by Valéry and Mauriac; music night by Stravinskij, Petrassi, Milhaud, Honegger, Poulenc, Auric and Alfret Cortot. During the summer, cosmopolitan worldliness was at the grand villa of Marlia, during the winter in Aracoeli in Rome or at the Cometa Gallery that she founded in 1935, until 1938, together with the Italian poet Libero de Libero. An international world in Rome, in which artists, intellectuals and fashionable musicians gravited. Alfred Cortot (Nyon, 1877 – Lausanne, 1962) Alfred Cortot was a French pianist and conductor, one of the most renowned classical musicians of the 20th century. He was especially valued for his poetic insight into Romantic piano works. As one of the most celebrated piano interpreters of Chopin, Schumann, and Debussy, Saint-Saëns and Schumann. Cortot produced printed editions of the piano works of all three, notable for their inclusion of meticulous commentary on technical problems and matters of interpretation. Cortot suffered from memory lapses in concert (particularly notable from the 1940s onwards), and often left wrong notes on his later records
