Andy Warhol Andy Warhol Cars 1989 (Calendar), 1988 Offset Lithograph Calendar on high quality smooth metallic finish paper 22 x 14 1/2 inches Unframed This is the complete Mercedes Benz vintage calendar, containing 13 pages aside from the front and back covers. The cover image depicts the Mercedes Benz C111 Experimental Vehicle, 1970. From 1983 to 1992, Daimler Benz AG published an annual calendar featuring their automobiles. The 1989 calendar was devoted to Andy Warhol's car designs. The first page of the calendar describes the contents as such: " 'Andy Warhol, Cars', which provided the source material for this calendar, is believed to be the last work of America's leading artist of his generation, and will be (or was, depending on when you read this) on exhibition at New York City's Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum from September 30 through November 27. This will be the only American exhibition of Warhol's last project, which was first shown to the public in Tuebingen, West Germany, in the winter of 1988, and which will be going on exhibition in Japan and Europe before finally joining the rest of the Daimler-Benz art collection at the corporate headquarters in Stuttgart. The 47 works on display at the Guggenheim are part of a project that was never completed, being interrupted by the sudden and untimely death of Warhol in February, 1987. Warhol's efforts had their beginnings in the centennial celebrations of Daimler-Benz. These took place in late January, 1986, and were witnessed by Hans Meyer, a Dusseldorf art dealer who had represented Warhol in other matters, and who had sold other works to Daimler-Benz. Mayer felt the 100th anniversary should be commemorated with something more than a nationwide (in West Germany) television show, and suggested this to officials at Daimler-Benz. He then went to Warhol with a photo of the company's most famous car, the 300 SL Gullwing, and found the artist was fascinated by it. Warhol (who never had a driver's license) then produced the 300 SL piece shown in this calendar. This was presented to Daimler-Benz, and the resulting enthusiasm was the basis for an agreement. Warhol was to produce a total of 80 pieces depicting 20 cars taken from the first century of Benz, Daimler and Daimler-Benz history. Half of these were to become the property of Daimler-Benz, and half were to be Warhol's. The works that were produced are believed to have been done in late 1986 and perhaps in early 1987, and concerned themselves with eight models. The other models to receive the Warhol treatment had already been chosen and were practically on their way to New York when the news of his death on February 22 arrived in Stuttgart. ..." In very good vintage condition with some minor creasing and age wear on the bottom corners of the calendar.
