About the Item

La Psychlogie du peuple americain is a typewritten text of an oral speech. Likely a transcription of an history conference hold by Bernard Faÿ. With pencil autograph notes to the Countess A.L. Pecci-Blunt. With pencil Monogram and date. July 16th, 1932 Nine Pages, double-sided. In French. On tissue paper. In very good conditions, completely readable. With corrections of mistakes and annotations in pencil. Some abrasions of paper on the margins. Bernard Faÿ (Paris, 1893, Paris – Tours, 1978) Bernard Faÿ was a French historian of Franco-American relations, an anti-Masonic polemicist who believed in a worldwide Jewish-Freemason conspiracy. Faÿ had first-hand knowledge of the United States, having studied at Harvard, and translated into French an excerpt of Gertrude Stein's The Making of Americans and wrote his view of the United States as it was at the beginning of Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration. He also published studies concerning Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. Faÿ was a friend of Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas and of the American composer Virgil Thomson, who owed to Faÿ his access to French intellectual circles, for Faÿ knew most of the people in musical and literary Paris. He was active in compiling files on and attacking and imprisoning Freemasons during the Vichy regime. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. He escaped after five years and resumed teaching history in Switzerland, at Fribourg, Ouchy and Lutry, where he taught European History, American History and Cultural History. The Countess Pecci-Blunt The Countess Pecci-blunt was a volcanic woman: in 1935 founded La Cometa Gallery together with the Italian poet Libero de Libero. An internationl world was been born in Rome, in which artists and intellectuals graviteted aroujd the countess residences. At the sime time the Countess, best-known as "Mimì", organised literary presentations by writers like Cecchi, Moravia, Montale, lectures by Valéry and Mauriac; music night by Stravinskij, Petrassi, Milhaud, Honegger, Poulenc, Auric and conferences of each kind.
