A shallow vase of azalea blossoms sits on a dramatically lit chair, casting pools of abstract shadow and light. "This piece is an homage to Matisse and Diebenkorn whose works were shown together at a major museum show in 2018," says artist Elliot Coatney.

About the Artist
Artist Elliot Coatney creates warm, impressionist landscapes inspired by his surroundings in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. He began drawing and painting in watercolor at a young age under the direction of his grandmother, an amateur painter. Throughout his school years, he learned the art trade as a studio assistant for a local painter. Today, he works from a home studio in the mountains with old warped hardwood floors covered in paint splatters. "It's cramped and cluttered, but somehow there's always room for me and my children who love to join me with their paints and brushes and other creative projects," says Elliot. His artwork has been featured in juried shows throughout the southeast, including at the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild.
