Emile TessierMid 20th Century Art Pottery, Potiche Malicorne par Emile Tessier
About the Item
French mid century ceramic vase by Emile Tessier. The piece is initial signed to the base.
A wonderful classic piece of ceramic by the noted French ceramicist Tessier. Of classic form, inspired by earlier Chinese ceramics but with his inimitable modern twist. Fine white glaze in good original condition.
Emile TESSIER (1887-1971) was originally from Malicorne. He began his apprenticeship as a painter-decorator at the Plat d'Etain earthenware factory under the direction of Léon Pouplard.
Tessier founded his pottery in 1924, which became Faïencerie d'Art de Malicorne (FAM). Over time, Emile Tessier diversified his production by inventing what would become Malicorne's specialty: openwork earthenware.
His deep knowledge of ceramic art and his resolutely modern approach allowed him to build one of the most prosperous earthenware factories in the West of France. The entrepreneur drew his inspiration from the traditions of the great ceramic regions that have disappeared such as Rouen and Strasbourg. He reinterpreted their motifs with a touch of originality. The decorations take up the now classic motifs of great French or European earthenware factories of the eighteenth century.
Passionate about innovation, Emile chose to surround himself with talented craftsmen. These artists brought to his company a creative richness that marks its time. His legacy is a pillar of the history of earthenware in France.
It was in 1747 that a first earthenware factory was founded in Malicorne by Jean LOISEAU. The abundance of clay and wood to feed the firing kilns undoubtedly contributed greatly to attracting this first earthenware maker, as well as the port located on the river: flat-bottomed boats sailed on the Sarthe to reach Le Mans in the north or Angers and Nantes in the south.

Pair of French Mid Century Drawings, 'Ligne Claire' after Hergé, Grasse and Nice
Located in Cotignac, FR
Pair of French mid 20th Century drawing in the style of Georges Remi, dit Hergé. The works are not signed but both are titled and dated. Presented in modern frames under glass.
The first is a charming street view of Cannes on the Cote D'Azur in the south of France, an area now internationally famous for its annual film festival. The artist has captured the imposing nature of the fine stone buildings with their blue and green shutters towering over the scene. Next to it fine trees so characteristic of French streets are just coming in to leaf. Two men go about their business, one is walking towards a cafe. Cars and a red delivery truck animate the scene.
The second an equally charming view of the chapel at the Nice Chateau cemetery on the Cote D'Azur in the south of France. The artist has captured the imposing nature of the fine colourful stone buildings with their arches, cupolas and finials. Surrounding the buildings are trees and bushes and to the foreground cars of typical 1960s design. The style of the artist is clearly inspired by the animations of Georges Remi, dit Hergé which were so popular at this period.
Georges Remi, more commonly known as Hergé created his own clean, expressive style of drawings known as ligne claire...
