Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716) was a German physician and naturalist. He had been working in Japan as physician for the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie in Nagasaki from 1690 to 1692. During his stay he visited Edo twice, being received by the Shogun s part of the local head of the Compagnie. He then took many important informations about Japan, making sketches of plants, buildings, manufacts etc., which would have been then used as model for the engravings of the book. After his return to Europe he devoted much of his time to writing accounts about his travelling experiences. Since Kaempfer died in 1716, the manuscript of the History of Japan was acquired by Sr. Hans Sloane and translated by his librarian Johann Caspar Scheuchzer, who then became also the publisher of the English editions of the book in 1727 and 1728 (this second release is the first complete of a Second Appendix, as described above). The success of the book, which first introduced European audience to the real History, Cultural and Physical description of Japan, allowed the release of a Dutch (1729 – 1733) and a French (1733) edition and of a later and shorter German edition (1779). Thomas Rowlandson (13 July 1757 – 21 April 1827), he was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian Era, noted for his political satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker, Rowlandson produced both individual social and political satires, as well as large number of illustrations for novels, humorous books, and topographical works. Like other caricaturists of his age such as James Gillray, his caricatures are often robust or bawdy. Rowlandson also produced highly explicit erotica for a private clientele; this was never published publicly at the time and is now only found in a small number of collections. His caricatures included those of people in power such as the Duchess of Devonshire, William Pitt the Younger and Napoleon Bonaparte. William Combe (25 March 1742 – 19 June 1823) was a British miscellaneous writer. His early life was that of an adventurer, his later was passed chiefly within the "rules" of the King's Bench Prison. He is chiefly remembered as the author of The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax...

Untitled, Intaglio, Etching on Paper, Modern Indian Artist "In Stock"
By Laxma Goud
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
K. Laxma Goud - Untitled, Intaglio - 11 x 9 inches (unframed size) Etching on paper, 2014 Style : Goud displays versatility over a range of mediums, from printmaking, drawing, watercolour, gouache and pastels to glass painting and sculpture in bronze and terracotta. Over the many years of his artistic career, he is known to have moved from one medium to another with élan. Fellow artist T. Vaikuntam, in one of his interviews, reminisces that it was Laxma Goud who introduced him to the art of sketching and made him aware of the possibilities of this medium. When one looks at Goud’s work, rustic, raw, and potent might be the first words that come to mind. His portraits of men and women represent the dynamic Indian ethos rather than particular individual identities. A recurrent theme with the artist is that of the erotic, treated as an active and powerful aspect of male and female sexuality and existence. Goud’s work is dramatic; his protagonists are raw and vivacious in their appeal, imbibed with energy that reverberates through his strokes and textures. Most of Goud’s art is centered on the rural, recreating landscapes from his childhood as if they were frozen in time. In the artist’s later work, his figures turn softer, more introspective than brash in their outlook. About the Artist and his work : Born : 1940 in Nizampur, Andhra Pradesh...
