About the Item

This is a Typewritten Letter Signed by Giuseppe Prezzolini to the Countess Pecci Blunt. New York, September 30th 1941. In Italian. One page, single-sided. On letterhead paper "Columbia University in the City of New York". Excellent condition, perfecly readable.Including original envelope. In response to a previous letter from the Countess requesting information on American schools, Giuseppe Prezzolini, from the chair of Roman Languages at the Columbia University, responds with four study hypotheses and practical advices to help her choose, the most suitable school for the Countess's daughter . Giuseppe Prezzolini (Perugia, 1882 - Lugano, 1982). The Italian literary critic, journalist, editor and writer, Giuseppe Prezzolini later became an American citizen in 1940. In 1929 he obtained an annual professorship at the American University and moved from Paris to New York with his family. He assumes the direction of the Italian House at Columbia University. The result of his research work will be the bibliographic repertory of the history and criticism of Italian literature from 1903 to 1942, published in 1946. In January 1940 he became an American citizen and resigned as director of the Italian House. In 1948 the New York university named him "professor emeritus" of Italian studies. In the meantime he has started collaborations with some Italian newspapers. He was the author of many books in both Italian and English, including primary essays of philosophy, history and literary criticism. Countess Anna Laetitia Pecci (Rome, 1885 - Marlia, 1971) Better known as Mimì Pecci-Blunt , the Italian noblewoman was an art collector, patron and nephew of Pope Leo XIII. Extremely volcanic, she was very active in the cultural field, opening numerous lounges, galleries and theaters. In 1919 she married Cecil Blumenthal, later changed to Blunt, a wealthy Jewish banker from New York, heir to an important collection of nineteenth-century French painting. His Parisian and Roman salons was frequented by artists and intellectuals of the caliber of Salvador Dalì, Paul Valery, Poulenc, Paul Claudel. After 1938 she will open a branch of La Cometa Gallery of Rome, in New York.
