Newspaper article “Giuseppe Ungaretti revient sur les lieux où il connut Apollinaire Braque et Picasso”. Paris, March 31st 1954. . Background and Synopsis of the correspondence After receiving the tributes for the French translation of the poetic collections "L'allegria", "Sentimento del tempo", "Il pain", "The promised land" and "A cry and landscapes", by Jean Lescure of Edition de Minuit in 1954, Giuseppe Ungaretti was convinced he deserved the Nobel Prize for Literature. To reach this goal and capture the Swedish prize the Italian poet worked hardly: he privately contacted Italian and foreign men of culture, including the Countess and patron of arts, Pecci-Blunt, and also academics, publishers and politicians, such as the foreign minister, Attilio Piccioni or Marallini. All to try to get an official candidacy from the Italian government. Ungaretti was thus a candidate several times but never received the Nobel. Despite the strong pressure exerted on the Royal Swedish Academy, as these letters testify, the prize was stolen from Ungaretti by Ernest Hemingway in 1954. Two other Italian poets had the fortune to be awarded: Salvatore Quasimodo in 1959 and then Eugenio Montale in 1975.
