About the Item
From the Artist’s Website: The first design's process spanned from 1975 to 1979 and included more than 30 prototypes. A puzzle to assemble, the seat rear outer tabs need to be positioned correctly between the integral front and back legs before rotating into place. Then, lift the front of the seat slightly as you insert the brace arms.
Gregg Fleishman (American) has been exploring geometric construction methods since 1972 and designing furniture since 1975 and is based in Los Angeles, CA.
After joining the MOMA New York collection in the early '90s, Fleishman shifted focus to structural work, incorporating 3D multi-pod groupings of puzzle panels. From 2011-2014, he built large-scale projects at Burning Man, including three “Otic” series structures, the Man Base Pistil, and the “Temple of Whollyness,” collaborating with Melissa (Syn) Barron and Lightning Clearwater III. His work integrated his frame and panel systems, demonstrating the advantages of adding European solid birch plywood to geodesic structures and using the “Lost Triangle” for efficient 3D construction. The Temple, a six-story structure assembled in 15 days without metal fasteners, was built with CNC-cut wood parts and required two cranes for assembly.
He has also contributed to local festivals such as Lucidity, Disclosure Fest, and Desert Hearts, as well as internationally with the Otic Oasis at Thailand's Wonderfruit Festival from 2015-2019.
Fleishman envisions creating future cities, using Burning Man as a testing ground for larger habitats. From cars to chairs to lights, his work aims to reimagine domestic spaces.
