Vases and pots support an array of textured wildflowers, standing out against a rich, dark background. A freeform stripe pattern on the tablecloth adds rhythm and contrast. Artist James Hartman includes a chair and a cup as a quiet invitation for the viewer to sit and enjoy the scene.
About the Artist
Artist James Hartman paints expressive California landscapes infused with color, memory, and place. “My goal was to be able to give my children paintings since the ones I live with from our family members are so meaningful,†says James. He grew up the tenth of eleven children in St. Louis and later moved to the Bay Area, where he studied at both the San Francisco Art Institute and Stanford. Deeply influenced by the Society of Six and Bay Area figurative painters, James spent over a decade painting outdoors with artists who had direct ties to that legacy. His studio is a converted 1908 carriage house next to his garden, complete with a skylight, solar ventilation, and bolts of canvas hanging from the rafters. Outside of painting, James enjoys biking the Bay with his wife, tending to his garden, and visiting museums with his children and grandchildren.

James Hartman
California painter James Hartman was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1950. He studied art at Meramec College. When Hartman was in art school, he became fascinated with the Society of Six, a group of artists who painted en plein air and exhibited together in the San Francisco Bay Area during the early 20th century. Hartman's paintings of the Northern California landscape pay tribute to some of the great Bay Area artists of the past. His expressive scenes feel alive through his vibrant use of color and his painterly brushwork. Hartman’s paintings have an immediate visual impact from a distance, yet up close, dissolve into a series of confident marks and strokes. Hartman has participated in numerous shows throughout the Bay Area and his paintings are now included in collections both private and corporate internationally.
