About the Item

Basquiat Downtown 81 The Show: Vintage original 2001 Basquiat exhibition poster published on the occasion of the historic exhibit: Basquiat Downtown 81 The Show. Downtown 81 was produced by Maripol and directed by Edo Bartoglio with a screenplay by Glenn O’Brien. Starring Jean-Michel Basquiat, the film documents the post-punk art and music scene of New York in the 1980s. Although filming took place in the 1980s, Downtown 81 was completed in 2000, and has rarely been shown. This poster announces the exhibition related to the film held at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in 2001. Rare, highly collectible Basquiat ephemera which would look fantastic framed. Dimensions: 11.5 x 17 inches. Good overall vintage condition; minor vertical fold lines containing soft creasing; minor signs of handling. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Image credits: Edo Bertoglio & Maripol. Basquiat Downtown 81: Further background: "Shot as ''New York Beat'' in 1980-1981 but completed for release only last year, ''Downtown 81'' emerges as a nostalgic portrait of pre-Giuliani Manhattan, an unruly place full of garbage, graffiti, rubble-strewn lots, unlicensed after-hours clubs and highly idealistic kids eager to make their mark as avant-garde artists and musicians. The film's central figure is Jean, a young Bohemian engagingly played by a not yet famous Jean-Michel Basquiat. Jean survives mainly by relying on the worldwide network of hip: there will always be another bar to go to, another gig to Crash, another wealthy European to write a check, another gorgeous model in a Cadillac convertible to give him a ride home. The script, by the rock critic Glenn O'Brien, also the film's co-producer, follows the basic day-in-the-life format, beginning with Jean's release from a hospital. Jean returns to his Alphabet City tenement to find an angry landlord demanding his back rent, and departs with a painting he hopes to sell. The day brings many disappointments but also many fortuitous encounters. He meets assorted new-wave musicians (Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Tuxedomoon, James White and the Blacks, DNA, the Plastics, and Walter Steding, most of whom perform); go-go dancers; and street people, among them Deborah Harry, who plays a bag lady with magical powers. It's as a documentary that ''Downtown 81'' is most successful, particularly at those moments when the somewhat unfocused filmmaking allows us to look past the foreground characters and catch glimpses of a vanished cityscape: the pornography shops and grind houses of West 42nd Street, the greasy spoons and outlet stores of East 14th Street, the labyrinthine interior of the Mudd Club in what was then the largely uncharted territory south of Canal Street." Basquiat at Tony Shafrazi gallery 1996 (Basquiat Dust Heads announcement)
By Jean-Michel Basquiat
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Jean-Michel Basquiat A TRIBUTE: Important Paintings, Drawings, & Objects: Vintage original 1990s Basquiat announcement card to: Jean-Michel Basquiat at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, September 21 - November 23, 1996. Cover image features a reproduction of Basquiat's Dust Heads (1982). Off-set printed gallery announcement. 7.5 x 6.25 inches (folded closed). Very good overall vintage condition. Some light rub marks to reverse. Published by Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York, 1996. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Jean-Michel Basquiat’s dramatic life and iconic paintings—which variously feature obsessive scribbling, enigmatic symbols and diagrams, and iconography including skulls, masks, and the artist’s trademark crown—make him one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. The self-taught painter embraced graffiti before committing to a studio practice. He found a mentor and friend in Andy Warhol, who helped the young artist navigate the 1980s New York art world. Across his oeuvre, Basquiat drew on his own Caribbean heritage; a convergence of African American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; classical themes; and pop cultural figures including athletes and musicians. The immediacy and intellectual depth of his paintings won him widespread acclaim both before and after his untimely death at the age of 27. Related Categories Basquiat Bruno Bischofberger. Biography: Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960 - August 12, 1988) was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980's as part of the Neo-expressionism movement. Basquiat first achieved notoriety in the late 1970s as part of the graffiti duo SAMO, alongside Al Diaz, writing enigmatic epigrams all over Manhattan, particularly in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side where rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop music culture. By the early 1980s, his paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. At 21, Basquiat became the youngest artist to ever take part in Documenta in Kassel, Germany. At 22, he was one of the youngest to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in New York. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his artwork in 1992. Basquiat's art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique. He used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection and for identifying with his experiences in the black community, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism. His visual poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle. Since his death at the age of 27 in 1988, Basquiat's work has steadily increased in value. In 2017, "Untitled", a 1982 painting depicting a black skull with red and yellow rivulets, sold for a record-breaking $110.5 million, becoming one of the most expensive paintings...
