Joseph Beuys considerava l'arte come un veicolo di trasformazione sociale rivoluzionaria e la sua pratica ad ampio raggio ha ampliato le nozioni di scultura d'avanguardia nel dopoguerra. Spesso associato al movimento Fluxus, Beuys si è concentrato su quella che ha definito "scultura sociale", coinvolgendo il pubblico e l'ambiente in modi nuovi. Diversi progetti prevedevano la piantumazione di alberi, la convivenza con un coyote per tre giorni e l'insegnamento di se stesso: L'artista è stato un influente docente della Kunstakademie di Düsseldorf, tra i cui studenti figuravano Anatol Herzfeld, Blinky Palermo e Sigmar Polke. Beuys ha partecipato più volte alla Biennale di Venezia e a Documenta ed è stato oggetto di mostre presso istituzioni come il Moderna Museet, la Tate Modern, la Kunsthalle di Berna, il Guggenheim Museum e il Museum of Modern Art, tra gli altri. Le sue opere sono state vendute all'asta a sette cifre.
