Estherly Allen'White Stoneware (Face)' original hand-built ceramic plate by Estherly Allen1986
1986
About the Item
This small hand-built plate, 'White Stoneware (Face),' is an intimate and exciting example of the ceramic work of Estherly Allen. She was a student of George McNeil, an important Abstract Expressionist, and this Expressionist influence is visible in this experimental work. On the surface of the plate, Allen has applied the glazing like gestural strokes of paint, creating the playful form of a face with wide eyes and staccato hair. The result reminds of the ceramic output of Pablo Picasso, whose original and edition work has become a favorite of collectors worldwide.

Artist's Statement: Walking outside my door bordering the Prescott National Forest I gather objects in the landscape and on the path of everyday life. It is impossible not to find a treasure. This is the impetus and fuel I use to build my mixed media sculptures and collages. With the addition of wire, adhesives, paper, and more, new forms emerge in a spirited improvisational dance. A no-thought logic brings direction into focus. Propelled by this intuitive freedom the unconscious reveals endless curious beautiful worlds of figures, faces, and places. The real becomes abstracted, the unconscious evokes the surreal. Ease and connection from the inside out reinforce the foundation of my oneness with nature and my creative process.
Allen is from Wisconsin and currently lives in Arizona with her sculptor husband, Gene Galazan.

'Art Column (ART DBG)' original signed ceramic sculpture toy blocks pop art
Located in Milwaukee, WI
Art Column (ART DBG)' is an original signed ceramic sculpture by Robin Campo. It is a rare and early example of the artist's fanciful work, made only a year after he earned his Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and while he was developing his reputation through local galleries. Campo is here working in the later traditions of pop art by using the ceramic medium for trompe l'oeil effect: the sculpture is made to look like an oversize stack of toy wood...

'King of Farts' original ceramic vase and relief signed by Michael Gross
By Michael Gross
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The ceramic sculptures of Wisconsin artist Michael Gross are personal narratives that reveal an unusual mix of earthly magic and primal vitality. The artist works in a variety of forms, including figurines, large vessels and furniture. The present vase is among the top tier of his works from the 1980s, showing multiple playful figures in relief around the vessel. In his Neo-Expressionist style, hearkening to the works of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, the figures are colored in painterly polychrome. Also, not unlike the painted narrative vessels of Ancient Greece, though much more subversive, many of the figures and stories are identified with text: 'King of Fart,' 'Dance Little Sister,' 'Girls for Every Boy,' and 'Beach Boy.'
22 x 13 x 12 inches overall
Signed 'Gross' near base
Dated 1986 near upper rim

Alice Ballard - Artist Statement
My art is a reflection of my relationship with natural forms. These forms come to me
on walks, while I work in my garden, or appear as gifts from friends who share my
fascination with the beauty inherent in Nature’s abundant variety of forms. It is often
the metamorphosis of nature’s forms, as they change from season to season, that
attracts me. I am endlessly drawn to that universal world in which differing life forms
share similar qualities.
I spend countless hours contemplating a particular form in order to feel its energy. It
becomes a Zen-like connection not unlike a meditation. As an artist, I hope that
those who choose to connect with my work can share some of the harmony and
tranquility I feel through the creative process. Perhaps, at the very least, the viewer
will give those small, often unnoticed forms in Nature a second glance.
Alice R. Ballard. (born June 16, 1945, Florence, South Carolina) is an American ceramicist based in Greenville, South Carolina. Much of her work is characterized by the organic earthenware forms of closed containers...
