About the Item

This piece titled "Bourbon on the Rocks" is an original artwork made from hand embroidered thread on paper by Kelly Kozma. This piece is shipped in the pictured white frame and measures 8.75”h x 10.75”w. "In our culture today it seems like we are always looking for the fastest route, the shortest line, and the easiest way to get things done. We text instead of sending a letter; fly instead of taking a road trip; order online instead of going to a store. There is a constant need to find the most efficient ways of accomplishing our goals, only to enable us to add more to our to-do lists and pack more into our busy days. In this new series, I explore these themes through the use of food-related phrases. Food and the rituals around cooking and eating are some of the most universal ways we connect as humans. Whether it’s celebrating a life event, mourning a loss, pizza and a movie night, or learning to make a great grandmother’s recipe. All these things bring us together to connect in some way, which is why I felt that these phrases would resonate with so many individuals. I removed several letters, leaving only what was essential for our brains to decipher the words, similarly to the way we race through our fast-paced days. Each phrase is hand embroidered using the meticulous technique of French knotting. My goal by making thousands of knots in a traditional manner to depict these abbreviated words was to draw attention to our somewhat frenzied way of living and explore the question of why we are always on the go. Throughout the pandemic, it seemed as if people were relearning the importance of slowing down, but as soon as things started to reopen and activities began to resume, these lessons were soon forgotten and we started leaving the letters out again, so to speak. While these were the driving themes of this series, the work is also meant to have a light-hearted air and remind us of the joys of gathering together. My intention is that when exploring these pieces, the viewer will conjure their own personal memories associated with each phrase and also be reminded to pump the breaks on life and take the scenic route home every once in a while." "Potluck" paper collage, hand-embroidery, geometric pattern, thread, french knot
By Kelly Kozma
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This piece titled "Potluck" is an original artwork made from collage, hand embroidery, and latex paint on canvas by Kelly Kozma. This piece is shipped in the pictured white frame and measures 6"h x 6"w framed. The catalyst for this new body of work was a jar of leftover magazine cutouts from a collage I made in 2010. Reusing leftover materials as well repurposing items that might end up thrown away, has become a very important part of my process the past decade. Stumbling across this jar of coin sized images that had waited patiently on a shelf for 12 years, ignited my creative process and drove me to explore collage in a new way. Unlike the piece from 2010 in which I assembled the images by piecing them together, I decided to examine each individual cut out on its on. By removing the image from any other context it allows you to focus solely on its meaning, purpose or feelings that it may evoke. Each image is embedded in a field of French knots which felt like a way of creating a time capsule of sorts for the object. Another inspiration behind this collection is my six year old son and his endless piles of sticks, stones, leaves, etc in our home. Only to him they aren’t sticks and stones, they are treasures. His ability to find a tiny twig or scrap of paper and not only cherish it but give it a backstory of why it is so special, is a beautiful thing and one I have tried to tap into with my new work. By placing a picture of a rubberband ball or a set of Dracula teeth or a banana in this embroidered box...
