Lisa Dinhofer
Dragonfly : Monochrome etching

2000

About the Item

Lisa Dinhofer's work is presented in a realist style, deftly creating meticulous portraits of creatures - dragonflies, turtles, birds, bats and grasshoppers - that comprise her surrounding neighborhoods of SoHo and the West Village. Dinhofer refers to her subjects as “our roommates and neighbors.” All of Dinhofer’s subjects are either found by the artist or are offerings from friends. They are rendered on paper in the artist’s studio. Dinhofer’s object-based studies magnify the subject up to ten times their actual size, celebrating the intricacies and subtleties of New York City’s flora and fauna. The flexibility of color pencil enables the artist to articulate the surface texture and transparency of a cicada wing, the soft plumage of a redheaded sparrow, and the radiating patterns on a tortoise shell.
