About the Item

This lot is composed of : a Telegram by Mario Soldati to Maria De Matteis. Written In Italian. Rome, April 20th, 1943 (from the postmark on the back); a Autograph Letter Signed by M. Soldati to Maria De Matteis. Rome, October 1st 1953. In Italian. One page, double-sided, on letterhead paper "Fortuniafilm - Via della Mercede 21". Through this letter and telegram, the Italian movie director Mario Soldati demands the urgen collaboration of the talented costume designer, Maria de Matteis. The autograph letter refers to the Wayward Wife (Italian: La provinciale), an Italian melodrama film directed by Mario Soldati, with costume by Maria De Matteis, based on the same-name novel by Alberto Moravia. In 2008 the film was selected to enter the list of the 100 Italian films to be saved. Mario Soldati (Tourin, 1906 – Lerici, 1999) The Italian writer and film director, Mario Soldati won the Strega Prize for Lettere da Capri in 1954. He directed several works adapted from novels, and worked with leading Italian actresses, such as Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida. Soldati began directing in 1938. His most well-known films are Piccolo mondo antico (1941) and Malombra (1942) with Isa Miranda, both based on novels by Antonio Fogazzaro. These two films belong to the early 1940s movement in Italian cinema known as calligrafismo. Other popular films were Tragic Night (1942), based on Cinelli Delfino’s novel, Eugenie Grandet, based on Balzac's novel, with Alida Valli; Fuga in Francia (1948); The River Girl (starring Sophia Loren), and La provinciale. In addition to the cinema, Soldati also regularly published articles in Italian newspapers, including Il Mondo, Il Corriere della Sera, La Stampa, Avanti, L'Unita and Il Giorno. Maria De Matteis (Florence, 1898 - Rome, 1988) Maria De Matteis is famous in the world of cinema and theater as a costume designer. The teachings of Gino Carlo Sensani and professional experiences alongside directors such as Luchino Visconti, Orson Welles, Vittorio De Sica and Mario Soldati, led her to carry out a research based on the careful analysis of the intimate nature of the characters she dresses, and to find a personal stylistic code, in accordance with the various directorial intentions. She received the “Nastro d’Argento ”twice, first in 1953 for The Golden Carriage (1952) directed by Jean Renoir, then in 1961 for Mario Bonnard's Gastone (1960), while in 1957 he had obtained an Oscar nomination for War and peace (1955; War and Peace) by King Vidor. In 1971 she was awarded with the BAFTA Film Award for costumes of Sergej F. Bondarčuk's Waterloo (1970).
