Tragica Notte by Soldati is a lot composed of two items: Telegram by Mario Soldati to Maria De Matteis. In Italian. May 1941 (from the postmarks on the back). Autograph Letter Signed by M. Soldati to Maria De Matteis. Rome, Frebruary 14th 1942. In Italian. One page, double-sided, on letterhead paper "Lux Film". With autograph notes by a unknown Iole. Signed Mario S. Through this letter and telegram, the Italian movie director Mario Soldati demands the urgen collaboration of the talented costume designer, Maria de Matteis, to realized together Tragic Night. Indeed Tragic Night (Italian: Tragica notte) is a 1942 Italian drama film directed by Mario Soldati and starring Doris Duranti, Carlo Ninchi and Andrea Checchi. It is based on a 1928 novel by Delfino Cinelli. It was realized at the Scalera Studios in Rome. It belongs to the movies of the calligrafismo style. Mario Soldati (Tourin, 1906 – Lerici, 1999) The Italian writer and film director, Mario Soldati won the Strega Prize for Lettere da Capri in 1954. He directed several works adapted from novels, and worked with leading Italian actresses, such as Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida. Soldati began directing in 1938. His most well-known films are Piccolo mondo antico (1941) and Malombra (1942) with Isa Miranda, both based on novels by Antonio Fogazzaro. These two films belong to the early 1940s movement in Italian cinema known as calligrafismo. Other popular films were Tragic Night (1942), based on Cinelli Delfino’s novel, Eugenie Grandet, based on Balzac's novel, with Alida Valli; Fuga in Francia (1948); The River Girl (starring Sophia Loren), and La provinciale (starring Gina Lollobrigida). In adition to the cinema, Soldati also regularly published articles in Italian newspapers, including Il Mondo, Il Corriere della Sera, La Stampa, Avanti, L'Unita and Il Giorno. Maria De Matteis (Florence, 1898 - Rome, 1988) Maria De Matteis is famous in the world of cinema and theater as a costume designer. The teachings of Gino Carlo Sensani and professional experiences alongside directors such as Luchino Visconti, Orson Welles, Vittorio De Sica and Mario Soldati, led her to carry out a research based on the careful analysis of the intimate nature of the characters she dresses, and to find a personal stylistic code, in accordance with the various directorial intentions. She received the “Nastro d’Argento ”twice, first in 1953 for The Golden Carriage (1952) directed by Jean Renoir, then in 1961 for Mario Bonnard's Gastone (1960), while in 1957 he had obtained an Oscar nomination for War and peace (1955; War and Peace) by King Vidor. In 1971 she was awarded with the BAFTA Film Award for costumes of Sergej F. Bondarčuk's Waterloo (1970).
