When artist Onelio Marrero's grandchildren visit, they love spending time in his spare bedroom, playing games, dressing up, and pretending. One of their favorite activities is to act as if they’re asleep when he comes to check on them, whispering as they try to keep up the illusion. Onelio couldn’t resist capturing the moment when two sisters, lying back to back, let their playful act nearly become reality. This piece blends spontaneity and control through its colors and brushstrokes.

About the Artist
Artist Onelio Marrero paints impressionist scenes that capture the romanticism of New York City or the soothing quiet of a rippling pond. His work evokes nostalgia and intimacy, giving the viewer a sense of having visited the same places before. “Each play of light, each texture, and each movement of a figure can have a captivating effect on me,” says Onelio. Living in New Jersey, he enjoys the luxury of having his favorite subjects to paint—whether it's the urban surroundings or the abundant nature just a short walk from his home. When he’s not painting, Onelio spends time with his grandchildren and immediate family, cultivates bonsai plants, and reads.
