About the Item
**Philip Vaughan** was raised in France by English parents and attended boarding school in England at age 9. There, he was introduced to the world of art by Gordon Taylor, a modernist and his first mentor at Brighton College. This early influence ignited Vaughan’s lifelong passion for architecture, painting, and sculpture.
Philip pursued architecture at Cambridge University before transferring to the Chelsea School of Art, where he graduated with a focus on art. His graduate research at Northumberland Polytechnic led to his first major public kinetic sculpture, the Neon Tower, installed at the Hayward Gallery in 1972 on London’s South Bank.
Vaughan later taught at the City of London University while exploring inflatables and kinetics. During this period, he constructed a 42-foot ocean-going sailing boat, which he sailed across the Atlantic in 1979. Upon reaching Florida, Vaughan began working with Walt Disney Imagineering, designing animatronic dinosaurs and theme park attractions.
Now based in Altadena, Los Angeles, Philip Vaughan continues to create sculptures, drawings, paintings, and public art commissions. His recent work often involves natural materials like bamboo and integrates light and other media in garden settings.
