René Lalique
Raisins vase, model 8878

1928

About the Item

René Lalique was a seminal French glass designer known for his Art Nouveau and Art Deco perfume bottles, chandeliers, vases, and jewelry. Widely revered and influential in the decorative arts, Lalique’s glasswork has a naturalistic exactness while also exhibiting stylized, elegant lines and ornamentation. He is noted for pioneering new industrial techniques that allowed for mass production and the proliferation of glass ornamental objects beyond the bourgeois class. Born on April 6, 1860, in Ay, France, he went on to study at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and later attended the Crystal Palace School of Art in London. He later worked as a freelance designer for companies like Cartier and Boucheron before making his own pieces, which were sold at Siegfried Bing’s Maison de l’Art Nouveau. Today, Lalique’s works are in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others. He died on May 1, 1945 in Paris, France.
