About the Item
An early studio glass creation by Dr. Robert Fritz.
Dr. Robert Fritz attended San Jose State College in the early 1950s, where he earned a Bachelors, and Master's of Arts. He went on to earn a PhD at Ohio State university.
The studio glass movement was just beginning at this time.
Ceramicist Harvey Littleton and scientist Dominick Lambino had studied the history of glass blowing, dating back to Roman culture. These two, working together, had devised a way for an individual to create fine art with glass, something that was only being done in large factory settings at the time.
Fritz was in the thick of the movement, having attended the World Congress of Craftsmen, which was held at Columbia University in New York City, then, in 1964, Fritz received a scholarship from Harvey Littleton to participate in a four-week glass seminar at the University of Wisconsin. Marvin Lipofsky, who later founded a glass program at the University of California, Berkeley, was a student of Littleton's and assisted with demonstrations at the seminar.
It was now possibly for a single artist to created blown-glass objects and vessels. Fritz took a job teaching at San Jose State University, where he founded the SJSU glass art department, one of the first colleges in the nation to have such a program. He also started the California Glass Exchange with fellow artist George Jercich, of California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA.
This work dates from the early 1970s, and is a great example of Dr. Fritz's work of the time period.
