About the Item

Hammered and patinated copper Unique piece Certificate : signature by Ry Hikosaka on the original certificate About this works Ryo Hikosaka says "Questioning the ephemeral by highlighting the illusory and inconstant nature of perception. The first element in this series is a metal plate fashioned in two parts: a frame enclosing a kind of mirror. The idea of a mirror is suggested by a surface whose white is tinged with green in the middle. The transparency of the patina allows the eye to enter into an imaginary depth, inviting the viewer on an introspective journey. The translucent white color reminds me of Suibokuga de Sesshu's "Haboku Sansui" painting, which features barely sketched shapes in a vaporous atmosphere. As for the green color, it reminds me of Leonardo da Vinci's backgrounds, those slightly misty faraway places he achieved with the sfumato technique. In this first piece, I tried to give the illusion of depth. It was inspired by Mark Rothko's paintings: their depth, suggested without being represented, incites me to an almost matrix-like contemplation. This metal sculpture is also a reminder of a white marble work I saw in Florence's Bargello museum, damaged by centuries of wind and rain. This damage has given a kind of depth to the white marble surface: it has revealed pale, violet or red colors, suggesting blood vessels that seem to animate the statue with a strange life." Ryo Hikosaka is graduated of the Beaux Arts de Tokyo and the prestigious École Boulle of Paris. A Parisian for over ten years, he launched his career as a freelance artist after working as a patina specialist at Atelier Steaven Richard and for the Cartier House. He works passionately with metal to make it speak and question us. The uniqueness of his work lies in this balance between classical fine art techniques and his Japanese sensibility. Several of his works are already in Japanese collections.
