About the Item

Capital with ox skull: "Bucranium". Carved marble. 16th - 17th century. Bucranium with garlands is a decorative element that dates back to the art of Ancient Rome, later taken up by architects and sculptors in the Renaissance era. The example most famous of this decorative motif can be found in the Ara Pacis in Rome, an altar created by order of the Roman Senate in the 1 century B.C. to commemorate the Victories of Augustus. Small architectural element, capital or upper part of pillar, from the late Renaissance. It is adorned with garlands, a bucranium skull and palm leaves. Traces of paint. On the back is an ancient initials engraved in marble: S I . A hole has been created on the back for hanging the object.
