About the Item

A friendly game of cards is the subject of this 19th-century Italian micromosaic. A special type of mosaic that uses incredibly small pieces of tesserae, or glass tiles, the micromosaic is one of the most time-consuming and labor-intensive art forms in the world. This example exhibits a remarkable level of detail considering the difficulty of the craft. Three knightly figures and a serving maid are captured beneath soaring architectural arcades in the work. From the colorful and highly detailed costumes of the figures to the cards that lay upon the table and the horses in the background, it exhibits a remarkable degree of precision and intricacy in its construction. The work represents a decisive change in tastes in Italian paintings in the late 19th century. While a small group of artists known as the Macchiaioli strayed from convention, the art market was almost entirely dominated by genre paintings that captured everyday scenes of contemporary Italian life. Mosaicists similarly adopted these highly marketable subjects, which were often anecdotal, festive or sentimental in tone. Carefree elderly couples, school children at play, knights and obliging maids — these were the preferred subjects of the 19th-century mosaicists, and they remain equally compelling to this day. 13 3/4" high x 11 1/4" wide

Italian Panel with Satyr and Nymphs
Located in New Orleans, LA
This extraordinary Italian gouache and oil on canvas brings two of the most popular characters from Greek mythology vividly the life - the nymph and the satyr. Both creatures are famed for their carefree natures and lascivious temperaments, and tales abound of satyrs pursing nubile nymphs in order to rape or seduce them, usually with little success. One such narrative humorously unfolds in the present piece, which depicts an indignant satyr captured by three nymphs with a golden net. The relationship between these two mythological creatures was a popular one for artists throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, though its origins stretch back to antiquity. Both satyrs and nymphs...

"The Cavalier" - The Vatican Mosaic Series 19th Century
Located in Jacksonville, FL
The Vatican Mosaic Studio originally founded in 1576 to create and install mosaics in the basilica was producing portable mosaics to meet demands of the Grand Tourist trade by the nineteenth century (p.96). Portrayals of romantic historical figures such as the cavalier in the present lot were a popular subject matter, evocative of well-known literary characters described in novels by Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) and rendered in genre paintings like those by Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891) and Enrico Tarenghi (1848-1938). Such paintings would have served as visual sources for micromosaics (Gabriel, 2000, p.124). In 1727, however, the Studio del Mosaico...
