Alena Ahrens
Of Antique Verse and High Romance

2023

About the Item

About: Alena's artistic approach is intuitive and gestural. She often works with a limited color palette of encaustic pigment and uses an iterative and spontaneous approach to apply the media. The final phases of creation sometimes include additional intuitive mark-making, subtle line work and sentimental hand-written text from historical, contemporary, or autobiographical sources. Washi Paper: The texture and slight distress in select areas near certain media application is intentional and intended to be part of the overall aesthetic. Shipping: The artwork will be rolled, shipped in a tube, and take approximately 5 business days. For shorter delivery timelines please message Alena directly to make arrangements. Matte and Frame Ideas: Float frames (glass/no glass over the monotype; glass will "flatten" the monotype) Traditional frames with or without a matte When framing the monotype a light ivory or white matte board illuminates the colors. For assistance and/or advice with framing and mounting the monotypes, please contact me directly. Signature and Certificate All artworks are signed on the back in pencil and include the title, creation year, and my signature. A certificate of authenticity is also included with the artwork. ++++ Alena Ahrens is a contemporary American-Asian artist. She studied performance art at MoMA PS1 under the tutelage of Marina Abramovic and was part of the inaugural class of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago residency program developed by Gregg Bordowitz. She switched from performance to painting in 2016 and developed an interdisciplinary approach to making visual art that she calls Poetics of the Self which was also applied to the learning sciences and published as a dissertation. She is representative of informal art and lyrical abstractionism. Inspired by Marina Abramovic, Cy Twombly and Helen Frankenthaler, Alena attaches great importance to the role of time, language, gesture, and color that are traced and swept on the surface in a diaristic way that tap into emotion and memory. Her paintings and prints have a choreographic character and she seeks to create a universal language defined by abstraction and the idea of movement and gesture. Through her work, she creates artworks that explore themes of sentiment, desire, and subjectivity. Alena has presented work at the Zhou B. Art Center (Chicago, IL), the Tipi Project (Brooklyn, NY), the Bruno David Projects (St. Louis), MoMA PS1 (NYC), and the DAMU Theatre (Prague, Czech Republic), Paris (FR), and featured in British Vogue Interiors. She has work in private collections and in the Museum of Encaustic Art.

In "With Many a Sunlit Arrow," color, line, shape, and texture collide on Kozuke ivory paper crafted from the fibers of the kozo plant. This one-of-a-kind, encaustic monotype illuminates a poetic interior landscape. The softness of the washi paper juxtaposed with the lush, textured encaustic/mixed media bring a sense of fragility and lightness to the artwork.
