"Where You End and I Begin, " Contemporary Fine Art Mirror

2018

About the Item

This contemporary mixed media piece is made with mixed media on a circular mirror. Deep blue-grey color has been applied starting just above and continuing onto the bottom half of the mirror, giving it a painterly, dripped aesthetic but also allowing for mirror to continue to show through. The mirror base reflects its surroundings and changes in alternating light. It hangs beautifully and safely with a wooden cleat, giving the illusion that the work is almost floating on the wall. "'Moon Series' is a collection of works all created in the shape of a circle," the artist says. "I was drawn to the magic of this shape. It has no beginning or end, and no divisions, making it the perfect symbol of completeness. Each uniquely different in the use of color, composition and nature of experience it brings while standing in front it. I like the idea of interactive art to make people pause, be captured by the shapes and the depth of mirror." Lithuania native Alina is a contemporary glass artist. Her love for glass design began at Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts, where she learned techniques including blown glass, fusing, etching, casting, and stained glass under the instruction of Valmantas Gutauskas, apprentice of the acclaimed Dale Chihuly. She also studied art history at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste Munchen, where she found inspiration in Franz Klein, Egon Schiele, and Gustav Klimt. After graduating Alina travelled, ultimately moving to Connecticut in 2010. Although the values her academic education, she enjoys experimenting with different materials, paying tribute to traditional technique while embracing ‘the now’ and letting go. Today, Alina’s preferred glass medium is mirror, which she manipulates using acids and paint. Surprising passages of color and pattern entwined with preserved reflective areas create a charged, fluid composition that responds to light and and it's environment. "There are two things that fascinate me when working with mirrors: that my “canvas” is a challenging surface with which to work, and the introduction of a finished piece into an environment," Alina says. "Each new space or angle engages the viewer; reflections of light or rooms become a part of the piece. In a way, these mirror paintings are never-ending creations." LOREN MUNK (american b. 1951) MUNKEY BUSINESS Signed and dated 'Munk 84' verso, mixed media construction with paint brushes, mirrored mosaic tile, gold leaf and oil paint 57 x 33 x 23 in. (144.8 x 83.8 x 58.4cm) Provenance: Malcolm Forbes collection The artist Loren Munk (born 1951) is primarily known for his YouTube nickname James Kalm as an uploader of videos about New York exhibitions, amongst others. He presents himself as a maker of contemporary paintings for several decades and of cubist paintings of urban imagery. Munk has received accolades for his drawings and mosaics. He differs from traditional mosaic artists by the manner in which he incorporates glass into his decorative paintings. His unique and innovative use of materials such as mirror, gold-leaf and glass mosaic affirmed him as a founding force of Kitsch Art and a leading member of New York Neo-Expressionism. Munk's work debuted in SoHo in 1981 with a double show at J. Fields Gallery and Gabrielle Bryers. Since then, he has overseen an international career. In addition to exhibiting in Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, Munk has received national and overseas, public and private commissions. He is well represented in important collections throughout Europe, South and North America and the Middle East. Most recently, Munk has been producing a series of paintings which tackle the subject of art itself through a historical and diagrammatic lens. Munk documents the New York art world in YouTube videos, using the name James Kalm.
