2022

About the Item

One from a series of two abstract paintings made in 2022 by Amanda Andersen. These artworks began with the idea of a mountain range simplified into large layered shapes, a disoriented horizon line touched by wind and weather patterns. This piece has large areas of dark forrest green and ivory with mauve and light peach contrasted with black and white ovals–some accented with bright blue, red, green and yellow. Acrylic paint on canvas; on heavy duty stretcher bars ready to hang. 60 cm x 80 cm (23.6 x 31.5 inches) – 3.5 cm deep (1.37 inches deep). Initialed on the back. Original artwork ships in a box from Hamburg.

Large abstract acrylic painting on canvas by Amanda Andersen; one in a series of four created in 2020 during anxiety filled times due mostly to Covid. The shapes in these works represented a balloon at first–a common subject in the artist's earlier work, which honored the beauty and elegance of hot air balloons and also celebrated their invitation for a romantic escape. We all wanted an escape in 2020. The large shape can also be seen as a window; the static hole we all peered out from to check if the world was still out there. With stripes–also a common visual element in the artist's work, it may even suggest prison bars...

Provenance Steve Chase Design, Palm Springs, CA Ronnie Landfield was born in the Bronx, NY on January 9, 1947 - the same day as his older brother. As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York. Landfield joined the David Whitney...
