About the Item
Encaustic on panel.
It's simple; I create art because it makes me happy. I try not to overthink the process of what I’m painting and let my intuition be my guide. I love laying down layers and layers of color not knowing if they’ll emerge later or be sealed in the history of the painting. There’s a distinct relationship between the layers of my paintings and my own life experiences. Revealing bits of history when necessary and keeping certain memories hidden and private.
My paintings become a dialog of these layers, with transparent and opaque details. I build up these layers and then selectively scrape, incise and scar the surface creating a visible and archival history. There's always an element of surprise when my scraper or torch hits the surface. This plays perfectly on my conflicting need for control and spontaneity at the same time. The surfaces I create look delicate, yet they have endured a history of scraping and/or heating. My paintings are a visual representation and diary of my own journey and explorations.

Amy Van Winkle
Amy Van Winkle (b. 1969) is an artist living and working in Santa Fe, NM. Although her early artistic career focused on drawing, sketching, and mixed media works, she now works exclusively with the Encaustic medium. Van Winkle’s initial fascination with this ancient medium stemmed from its innate exchange between creation and restraint. The encaustic technique, which dates back to the 5th century BC, is the layering of pigmented beeswax, 20 to 30 coats deep, on a porous wood panel. By heating the surface with each application then scraping away repeatedly, Van Winkle achieves the unique balance of detail and minimalism. Once the composition is complete, mere hints remain of the color and texture residing just beneath the surface. This mastery of technique and dramatic restraint has garnered Van Winkle, a self-taught artist, international recognition. Her influence comes in large part from her surroundings in Santa Fe, as well as her travels throughout Southeast Asia and an elemental love of minimalist design. The exposure and approach is reflected in her works through luminous color, clean lines and captivating composition. Van Winkle hails from Boston, then Chicago. She graduated from Bowling Green State University with a B.S.B.A. in Marketing. Despite a successful advertising career, she found herself drawn to fine art and began painting, showing, and selling her own work. In 2010, she began exploring with encaustic materials and experienced a swift, meteoric rise into the contemporary art market. Van Winkle’s works reside in private and public collections around the world and she is represented by galleries throughout the US and Taiwan.

The fabrics, which are adhered to a light wood Birch panel and layered with a subtle layer of encaustic, are arranged in a whimsical motif that accentuates the spontaneous dyed patterns. The layers of fabric and encaustic create a textured, impasto surface. About the artist: Alaina Enslen expresses her artistic vision through repurposed fabrics infused with beeswax. The Cornwall-On-Hudson based artist collects pieces of textile that evoke memory, tradition, or experience like cherished worn heirlooms, discarded clothes, and religious garments, which are then assembled on panel in an abstract patchwork. Favoring fabrics with a neutral or subtle cool palette, she flattens and frays the material to explore color, form, and lines, reimaging used cloth...Category
