Andrea Stajan-Ferkul
This Is Where I Draw The Line #1 (Minimal Abstract, Neutral)

2018

About the Item

This is a series of four contemporary abstract paintings. The use of Stajan-Ferkul's distinct neutral palette is carried through into her abstract paintings where emphasis is put on simplifying the composition. Minimal yet powerful work, the aesthetically calm paintings invites the viewer to experience an immediate, purely visual response. A strong statement can be made with either vertical or horizontal display. // Andrea Stajan-Ferkul is a Canadian artist whose work conveys a sense of experimentation through the use of paint, fabric collage and abstract mark-making. While not exclusive to fashion, dresses have been a compositional focus throughout her oeuvre. With an emphasis on timelessness, her series of dress paintings shift between realistic representation and interpretive impressions. In contrast, her series of abstract works embrace minimalism, considerate to a restrained palette and composition. Stajan-Ferkul began her career in fashion advertising before shifting her focus to fine art in 2000. Her work has been exhibited widely through galleries and art fairs, and hangs in private and public collections across Canada, US and Europe. A graduate of Sheridan College of Art and Design, Andrea's paintings can be found in numerous public and private collections, her work has been published in magazines and book covers, and prints are distributed internationally. In 2009, Stajan-Ferkul was invited to exhibit her work in Ottawa’s Rideau Hall, hosted by (then) Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean. keywords: abstract, minimal art, minimalism, modern art, geometric art, atmospheric, contemporary art, design, graphic design, interiors, interior design, neutral, bone, off white, black and off white

Layers of paint build up this neutral palette where emphasis is placed on minimal composition. From a distance, the painting explores colour fields and geometric abstraction. Closer up, it's about subtle textures, intuitive mark-making, playful scribbles and remnants of colour. The blending of these two elements invites the viewer to experience a calm while stimulating, visual response. Arao’s geometric sewn fabric paintings reference woven textiles and ethnic patterns from the Philippines, reinterpreted in kaleidoscopic fabric compositions. Fabric, a material that seemingly begs for human touch, is something we all have a level of familiarity with. Whether it is clothing worn or removed from the body, commercially bought, hand dyed, or recycled weathered canvas, Arao harnesses the tactility and multiple interpretations of fabric, often alluding to its central relationship to the human body. Precisely sewn together into tapestry-like wall works, Arao’s background in painting is evident in his mastery of color and composition. Paired with his conceptual link to his identity as a gay Filipino-American, Arao’s works simultaneously reach back through history and into the future as powerful symbols of representation and beauty. Gathered from disparate sources, carrying the psychic or physical traces of the hands that manufactured or the bodies that wore the textiles used in his fabric paintings, there is a legacy of nuance woven into the fibers of each work. Written into each color choice, use of various types of fabric, and overall composition, is a steadfast trust in process and faith in intuition. Regarding this body of work, Arao states, “ In my sewn paintings, the stability of geometric forms is disrupted through the use of altered patterns and asymmetry, creating a space that’s dynamic and shifting – much like the concept of queerness itself.” Flexible, open-ended, and bounding with vibrant color, Paolo Arao...
