Andrew Lui
Andrew Lui is known for his use of gestural lines in vivid colors that bring to life themes of the voyage and historical drama. Lui’s artwork is avant-garde and as vibrant as the artist himself. He creates a three-dimensional blend of organic lines, shapes and space. Lui studied visual arts at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, then at the Accademia Belle Arti and the British Institute in Florence, Italy. He completed his training within one year at the University of London, U.K. Since 1974, Lui has had regular exhibitions, mainly in Canada and the United States, but also in Europe and Asia. Known mainly for his oils and watercolors, Liu is represented in the collections of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Pallazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy.

- Citation - tall, grey, black, white, figurative, abstract, brushed ink on paperBy Andrew LuiLocated in Bloomfield, ONBrushed ink scaffolding in grey and black leads the eye up the picture plane in this 55 inch tall painting on paper. The intense movement suggestive of rearing horses in this painterly work is in keeping with Lui's them of pilgrimage in which he explores the idea of "self-inflicted happiness" as a deliberate response to the melancholy and complexity of life. This painting is floated and framed. Born in Guangzhou, China, Lui (1951-2021) participated in the Chinese Cultural Revolution as a member of the Red Guard 1968-70 and then escaped to Hong Kong by swimming. Making his way to Toronto he studied at the Ontario College of Art and became a citizen in the late 1970s. He continued studies in the UK, and Italy where he was drawn to the dynamic Uccello's Battle of San Romano...Category
