About the Item

Different (Contemporary Painted Ceramic Tile Grid in Primary Colors) by Anne Francey Abstract Earthenware tile painting made of three panels with multi-colored blue, red, yellow, white and black ceramic glazes. 48 x 60 inches. Earthenware, ceramic glazes on panel This contemporary abstract ceramic tile painting was crafted by Saratoga, NY-based artist Anne Francey. The work, part of the artist's 'Configurations' series, is composed of Earthenware tiles painted in layers of colorful ceramic glazes in abstracted diamond designs. Gestural applications of ceramic glazes in hues of royal blue, red, and yellow contrast elegantly against dark tones of grey and black. Each tile is first painted with layers of glaze, fired separately, and then secured onto a wood panel backing. The entire painting, weighing close to 50 pounds, is comprised of three vertical panels that are installed together on two sturdy wood cleats. The ceramic painting hovers just slightly off of the wall due to the wood panel backing. About the Configuration series: Anne Francey writes, 'The tile-like ceramic pieces are to be hung on a wall like paintings. The relationship between geometric patterns and various configurations reflects on our need to find meaning in the events that shape our lives. But while geometric designs inevitably incorporate the unpredictable nature of the hand and fire that modeled it, more organic shapes strive to find a semblance of order.' About the artist: Anne Francey’s observation of the natural world has always been the point of departure in her clay work, evolving into a constant oscillation between representation and abstraction, organic shapes and geometric order, what's being shown and what's being hidden. Whether starting from a flower, a twig, an insect or a moss. Francey simplifies and flattens their shapes, blurring their visual identity in order to reveal a hidden meaning. Of her work, the artist states, “Could these abstracted forms of insects and plants, hardened for ever in the fired clay, become imprints of the past one day, like fossils of a bygone era?” Anne Francey currently resides in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Artist's Statement: "Around 30 years ago, not long after I had started painting seriously, I was at a one-man exhibition of the great Brice Marden at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art when I visited the annex to get a cocktail. There was one other guy at the small bar table in an otherwise empty room, waiting for his coffee to be handed to him. He turned and dumped half of it down my front. I immediately recognized him as none other than Brice Marden. He apologized profusely, but I stopped him and said: 'No problem: how often is it that Brice Marden dumps coffee on your pants? They're worth more now.' We both had a good laugh. At any rate - I was certainly channeling his early work when I began work on this series. They are made with oil and beeswax on wood panels...
