Totò and the Women by Annemarie Ambrosoli Oil on Canvas Abstract Expressionist

2017

About the Item

Toto and the Women (2017), oil on canvas stretched over wooden frame, 50x100 cm, by Italian contemporary artist Annemarie Ambrosoli (ICA - International Certified Artist) "Totò and the Women" painting was exhibited at the "Castel Dell'Ovo" in Naples in 2017 in a group exhibition on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the actor's death: Antonio De Curtis alias Totò. “I wanted to pay homage to Totò by interpreting one of his films with the same title: "Totò and the Women”. In the painting, the figures of the women have each one a different expression: adoration, surprise or joy. The hairstyles of the figures are varied and original. The braid in the center guides the viewer into the painting. Totò's figure is very recognizable. "I would like to keep his features clearly". The Women wear unique earrings. The background is painted in light blue-gray tones to give depth to the painting. A satin varnish was applied. It is framed with a silver frame. The framed painting measures 58 x 108 cm This artwork comes directly from the Artist's Studio Hand-signed by the Artist in the front lower center, dated and signed on verso of the canvas. Certificate of Authenticity included issued by the Artist The volume "Che dici Totò - Il Principe Antonio De Curtis dialoga con gli artisti", published by Giorgio Mondadori (ISBN 978-88-6052-829-2) is included. The image of the work "Totò and the Women" is on page 36 Annemarie Ambrosoli's figures are a symbolic representation of the human figure, which is simplified and stylized. The third dimension is eliminated, she paints flat figures, without shadows, with circles, shapes and where lively color predominates. In her paintings she likes to tell moments of everyday life, but her inspirations include the unexpected feeling and thoughts generated by poetry and music. Annemarie gives a lot of meaning to the mouth which is painted with few lines, but sufficient to convey to the viewer an emotion through the figure, that reflects the soul of the artist. The eyes are not important for the artist, while the mouth expressing an emotion is. Annemarie Ambrosoli plays with colors, shapes and symbols that everyone can interpret in their own way. The colors are vibrant, yet pleasing and in harmony She began painting as a landscape painter and she painted her landscapes outdoors in contact with nature. After the landscape period she has expressed herself with a new theme, joyful representation of geometric stylized figures, which give positivity, but also a bit of mystery Annemarie Ambrosoli has been awarded several times, in particular: • by A’Design Award in the "Arts, Crafts and Ready-Made Design" category in 2021 and 2019; • Nominee in the category of International Artist Award at the World Art Dubai in 2018; • Career Prize in the Press Room of Rome's Chamber of Deputies in 2018, awarded by START GROUP srls on 20 October 2018 • Gala de l’Art 2017 in Montecarlo, Annemarie Ambrosoli won second prize and received her award from Casa D'Aste Iori Piacenza at the Hotel Fairmont • Nominations Annemarie Ambrosoli’s has participated in numerous collective exhibitions in many cities in Europa and solo exhibitions in Italy and Austria She has exhibited at numerous art fairs in Europa, Canada, Dubai, Hong Kong Images of her works are published in art books Her works can be found in private collections in Europe and Asia Keywords: Women, Totò, Colors, Hairstyles, Braid, Figures, Hat, Geometries, Earrings, Ocher, Purple, Blue, Light Blue, White, Brown, Green, Red

  • Grey & Tan Abstract Expressionist Textural Mid-Century Abstract by Peter Witwer
    By Peter Witwer
    Located in Soquel, CA
Grey & Tan Abstract Expressionist Textural Mid-Century Abstract by Peter Witwer Heavily textured, expressive composition by Peter Witwer (American, 1928-1968). Over the top of a heavy base layer of plaster, Witwer has added various layers of oil paint, creating a massive amount of depth and texture. Sections of red peek out from underneath various shades of tan, grey, and black. Spots of blue and purple are used sparingly, hidden in the composition. Presented in a wood frame. Canvas size: 20"H x 40"W Frame size: 26.63"H x 46.63"W Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of the artist's work. Provenance: Without a will and a family that had little interest in his art, nearly all of his possessions and close to 100 paintings were turned over to SF’s Conservators Office. His friend, Albert Richard Lasker, purchased all of Peter’s possessions (including the art) and has taken care of them until this day, always sensing there was something remarkable about the collection. Wanting Peter’s work to finally be seen, Richard came to Lost Art Salon with Peter’s story after reading about the new gallery in a July, 2005 issue of the SF Chronicle. Born George Peter...

  • "Manhattan Night Life"
    By Vaclav Vytlacil
    Located in Lambertville, NJ
Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Vaclav Vytlacil (1892-1984) He was born to Czechoslovakian parents in 1892 in New York City. Living in Chicago as a youth, he took classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, returning to New York when he was 20. From 1913 to 1916, he enjoyed a scholarship from the Art Students League, and worked with John C. Johansen (a portraitist whose expressive style resembled that of John Singer Sargent), and Anders Zorn. He accepted a teaching position at the Minneapolis School of Art in 1916, remaining there until 1921. This enabled him to travel to Europe to study Cézanne’s paintings and works of the Old Masters. He traveled to Paris, Prague, Dresden, Berlin, and Munich seeking the works of Titian, Cranach, Rembrandt, Veronese, and Holbein, which gave him new perspective. Vytlacil studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich, settling there in 1921. Fellow students were Ernest Thurn and Worth Ryder, who introduced him to famous abstractionist Hans Hofmann. He worked with Hofmann from about 1922 to 1926, as a student and teaching assistant. During the summer of 1928, after returning to the United States, Vytlacil gave lectures at the University of California, Berkeley, on modern European art. Soon thereafter, he became a member of the Art Students League faculty. After one year, he returned to Europe and successfully persuaded Hofmann to teach at the League as well. He spent about six years in Europe, studying the works of Matisse, Picasso, and Dufy. In 1935, he returned to New York and became a co-founder of the American Abstract Artists group in 1936. He later had teaching posts at Queens College in New York; the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California; Black Mountain College in North Carolina; and the Art Students League. His paintings exhibit a clear inclination toward modernism. His still lives and interiors from the 1920s indicate an understanding of the art of Cézanne. In the 1930s, his works displayed two very different kinds of art at the same time. His cityscapes and landscapes combine Cubist-inspired spatial concerns with an expressionistic approach to line and color. Vytlacil also used old wood, metal, cork, and string in constructions, influenced by his friend and former student, Rupert Turnbull. He eventually ceased creating constructions as he considered them too limiting. The spatial challenges of painting were still his preference. During the 1940s and 1950s, his works indicated a sense of spontaneity not felt in his earlier work. He married Elizabeth Foster in Florence, Italy, in 1927 and they lived and worked in Positano, Italy for extended periods of time. Later on, they divided their time between homes in Sparkill, New York and Chilmark, Massachusetts, where Vyt, as he was affectionately called, taught at the Martha's Vineyard Art...

He began his formal education at the Tokyo State Art Academy where he took up painting. His early works are characterised by colourful abstractions, reminiscent of Favuism. In 1951 Imai was awarded the Kansai-Shinseisaku Prize and in 1952 the prize for the best new artist at the 15th Shinseisaku Salon. Imai relocated to Paris in 1953, the same and subsequent year he exhibited at the Salon de L’Art Sacré. Meanwhile, he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Sorbonne to read medieval history and philosophy. In 1955, Imai completely abandoned representational art in favour of abstraction. After meeting the art critic Michel Tapié via the artist Sam Francis, Imai was the first Japanese artist to join the Art Informel movement. In 1956 Imai was called upon by the Japanese artist Taro Okamoto to curate an exhibition entitled The World: Today’s Art in Tokyo. Artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Jean Fautrier, Lucio Fontana, and Karel Appel gained important exposure in Japan. It was also in 1957, when Imai arranged for Tapié and the artists Georges Mathieu and Sam Francis to travel to Japan, that a connection between Art Informel and Gutai occurred. The Ashiya-based Gutai Art Association formed in 1954 was proclaimed a kindred spirit by Tapié which he subsequently promoted internationally. Founding members included Yoshihara Jiro, Kanayma Akira, Murakami Saburo, Shiraga Kazuo and Shozo Shimamoto...
