About the Item
Canadian artist Aron Hill is known for their unique minimalist form and intuitive sense of colour. Their landscapes often include familiar themes of the sun, moon and empty spaces reminiscent of a prairie setting. In this composition, Hill uses embroidered lines to delineate the sky from the land. The dark half-moon encircled in bright yellow thread appears to eclipse a bleached sun below another pink line of thread. Hill uses a collage method to assemble these paintings which includes textural elements of thread and canvas.
“This darker piece is meant as a meditation piece- both in the making and in the viewing. The sun takes many forms and seems to disappear nightly, this is a reminder that it is still present and will be seen in the oncoming dawn.” Aron Hill
Aron Hill obtained a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Alberta College of Art and Design and an MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2006. They have exhibited across Canada and in Dubai. Hill’s work is held in private and corporate collections.

Aron Hill's practice is focused on a formalist type of painting that recalls aspects of minimalism and Color-Field paintings though with references to the figure throughout. They find conceptual company in the late modernist paintings produced particularly in Canada. The choice of primary colors and a restricted medium is a conscious restraint informed by Hill’s artistic influences such as Jack Bush and William Perehudoff. The work's graphic nature relies on the sheer flatness that this medium produces.
Hill currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. They graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary studies. Hill then completed their MFA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Hill has exhibited internationally, and occasionally lectures and writes.
