About the Item
Aron Hill is attracted to colour and shape. The Calgary artist explores these concepts with every brush stroke. In this bold work, Hill has rendered a polygon in bright yellow encircled in white and rimmed in gold leaf that pops against a black canvas. The gold creates glowing highlights around the lively tondo (circle) that sits about two inches away from the wall. Hill's work recalls the minimalist and shaped color field paintings of the American master Ellsworth Kelly. One in a series.

They obtained a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Alberta College of Art and Design and their MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2006. They have exhibited across Canada and in Dubai. Hill’s work is held in private and corporate collections.

Aron Hill
Aron Hill's practice is focused on a formalist type of painting that recalls aspects of minimalism and Color-Field paintings though with references to the figure throughout. They find conceptual company in the late modernist paintings produced particularly in Canada. The choice of primary colors and a restricted medium is a conscious restraint informed by Hill’s artistic influences such as Jack Bush and William Perehudoff. The work's graphic nature relies on the sheer flatness that this medium produces.
Hill currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. They graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary studies. Hill then completed their MFA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Hill has exhibited internationally, and occasionally lectures and writes.
