Athos Zacharias
Arctic Dream

1960

About the Item

Until his death three years ago at the age of 93, Athos Zacharias is a last living link, if not the last living link, to the first generation of Abstract Expressionist painters, many of whom spent significant periods of time on the East End of Long Island. He worked as an assistant to Elaine Dekooning, was Bill DeKooning's first assistant and worked for Lee Krasner, Grace Hartigan and Alfonso Ossorio. But he was much more than an artist's assistant. Although half a generation younger, he was and is an artist in his own right and part of the group, The New York School, that made post-war New York and America the new center of artistic expression. Zacharias first met DeKooning at the famed Cedar Bar in the late 50s, and their friendship grew from there. Dekooning writes about Zacharias: "I can say he was one of us...Zacharias was as much in the middle of it as anyone." Elaine DeKooning writes of Zacharias: "Athos Zacharias, as a painter, has serendipity: his colors and forms always charge into the right place at the right time." Zacharias was a teacher and an artist of note, his work in numerous museum collections, including the Corcoran, and he has participated in numerous solo and group shows, many of them on the East End of Long Island.

The story of the post-WWII New York School artists is still being written. The role of women in the art of the day still needs examination and study. Kurz is one such example. Diana Kurz (b. 1938) was born into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family whose business was Aryanized after the Anschluss forcing the family to flee, first to Spain, then across Europe, and finally to the United States. Brought up as a "normal" American girl, Kurz always wanted to be an artist. She studied at Brandeis, at Hunter with Robert Motherwell and received her MFA from Columbia. She received instruction from Hans Hoffmann, studied with Phillip Guston...

  • Bertha
    By Paul Burlin
    Located in Lawrence, NY
Paul Burlin had a long and successful career of eight decades, though his work did not turn to abstract expressionism--the style of this work and the style in which, arguably, his best work was produced--until the painter was in his seventies, a clear example of his stalwart, and lifelong pursuit of new forms of expression. He was the youngest to participate in the landmark Armory Show of 1913, showing alongside Monet, Picasso, Manet, and Degas, among others. Like many other modernists of his time, Burlin was fascinated by “primitive” art. While still in New York, Burlin was profoundly affected by the African tribal art that he saw at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, as well as the Marius de Zaya...
