Auguste Herbin
Composition sur le nom Herbin by Auguste Herbin

1942

About the Item

Auguste Herbin 1882-1960 French Composition sur le nom Herbin Signed and dated 'Herbin 1942' (lower right) Oil on canvas This bold and vivid abstract oil on canvas was painted by French painter Auguste Herbin, a pioneer in popularizing Modernist abstraction. Over his expansive nearly 60-year career, Herbin rubbed shoulders with art history greats from Pablo Picasso to Georges Braque while honing his personal and innovative style. With a daring color palette and crisp composition, Composition sur le nom Herbin, represents a transformative moment in the artist's career. Painted in 1942, Composition sur le nom Herbin embodies Herbin’s fully-formed artistic aesthetic and stylistic tenets. He developed his “alphabet plastique” that same year, a synergistic visual language of color and form that he described in detail in his published book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif. Though the artist was highly cerebral in his process of creating art, Composition sur le nom Herbin's magnetism is palpable. The geometric shapes visible in the composition — primarily crescents and circles — are rendered in bold oranges, purples and yellows on a deep blue background. The array of astral motifs creates a dynamic sense of movement, as if to capture planets orbiting around the central solar form. Auguste Herbin began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lille before moving to Paris in 1901. In the early years of his career, he experimented with a variety of styles, exhibiting Post-Impressionistic works at the Salon des Indépendants in 1906 and Fauvist paintings at the Salon d'Automne in 1907. After a brief Cubist period following his introduction to Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Otto Freundlich, Herbin co-founded his own artistic movement in the 1930s: the Abstraction-Création group in Paris. Devoted to encouraging abstract art as a response to the representational tenets of the Surrealist movement, then led by André Breton, Herbin served as the publisher and author for the group's eponymous art journal. Today, Herbin’s work resides in prestigious private collections and museum institutions around the globe, including the Tate Modern in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, among others. This painting is pictured in Herbin, Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint by Geneviève Claisse, page 420. Auguste Herbin 1882-1960 French Aoum II Signed and dated 'herbin 1944' (lower right); titled "aoum" 2 (lower left) Oil on canvas This bold and vivid abstract oil on canvas was painted by French painter Auguste Herbin, a pioneer in popularizing Modernist abstraction. Over his expansive nearly 60-year career, Herbin rubbed shoulders with art history greats from Pablo Picasso to Georges Braque before honing his personal and innovative style. Entitled Aoum II, the painting stands apart for its daring color palette and crisp composition. Painted in 1944, Aoum II embodies Herbin’s fully-formed artistic aesthetic and stylistic tenets. Only two years prior to its creation, Herbin developed his “alphabet plastique,” a synergistic visual language of color and form that he described in detail in his published book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif. Though the artist was highly cerebral in his process of creating art, one does not need to perfectly understand his principles to feel Aoum II's magnetism. The geometric shapes visible in the composition — primarily fragmented triangles and circles — are rendered in bold pinks, blues and yellows on a deep black background. His tiered application of color creates a natural three-register visual effect as if to tell a story from the apex of the form to its denouement. By Raoul Dufy
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Emprunt 6% Souscrivez (War Loan 6% Subscribe) Signed "Raoul Dufy" (lower right) Gouache on paper This vibrant gouache on paper by the renowned Raoul Dufy is not only a work of exceptional artistry, but also represents an important period in world history. The piece was a special commission ordered by the French government, who sought to encourage the French people to join in the post-war reconstruction efforts. Following World War I, the French government was destitute. The cost of the Great War had been tremendous not only in lives lost, but also in terms of infrastructure and finances. In order to reclaim its place as a great power on the world stage, France needed funds to reconstruct its key industries, and quickly. Thus, the government turned to one of the most famous French artists of the day - Raoul Dufy - to create this gouache on paper as an advertisement for the country's war bonds. The extraordinary work represents Dufy's own sense of patriotic duty. Entirely unique in his oeuvre, it is clear that Dufy wished to create something truly special to help his war-torn country. The artist deftly captures the industry of France in the colorful composition, showcasing bridges, buildings, ships and other key elements of the country's infrastructure in order to evoke the viewers' pride, patriotism and willingness to help. The words Emprunt 6% Souscrivez (War Loan 6% Subscribe) are boldly written across the top, seeking subscribers to a 6% interest loan to help rebuild the country - a very healthy return for the age. The powerful painting represents one of the most effective and extensive patriotic campaigns of all time. France relied heavily on the willingness of its citizens to lend money...

  • H.M. Saffer II, "Water Images IV", Pointillist Landscape Oil Painting on Canvas
    By H.M. Saffer II
    Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
Colorful landscape painting "Water Images IV" by artist H.M. Saffer II is a 40x30 oil on canvas. Painted in the style of pointillism, a series of tiny painted brushstrokes, this oil landscape features a pond in the golden light of day with the reflection of trees stretching across the surface of the light blue speckled water. About the artist: Born July 18, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, H.M. Saffer II launched his career by exhibiting his art at a public art show at the tender age of six. Upon graduation from Temple University in 1965, he traveled to Paris, France to enroll in graduate economics courses. Concurrently, HM's path took a different twist, as he soon leveraged his musical talent performing with notable French stars Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, and many others. He was later hired by Barclay Records as a producer, and had several hit records in 1968 and 1969. During this period, he was also the chef / owner of two restaurants in Paris, and later a third located in Ibiza, Spain. Remarkably, as engaged as he was, HM never stopped painting and exhibiting his works. Several of his shows - sponsored by his restaurants and music associates - "sold out" and were favorably written up by the press. Before returning to the United States in 1970, he completed selected studies at L'Ecole Des Beaux Arts and exhibited in Paris and Brussels, Belgium. HM continued on with his music career in the United States at Warner Brothers Productions where he co-wrote the international hit song, "Look What They Done To My Song, Ma", recorded by Ray Charles, Melanie and other performers. While at Warner he painted a forty foot mural in their Madison Ave., NY headquarters and exhibited his works in the firm's lobby. In 1972 HM was hired by the dynamic songwriter/producer Bob Crewe...
