About the Item
Brian never scrapes paint off, it’s all about the considered application of paint, one layer at a time. He carefully applies each treatment, allows it to dry and then scrutinises the result. After a while the paint surface, however carefully rendered, starts to assert itself anyway, and the expressive qualities reveal themselves according to the approach that Brian has taken. “When these qualities harmonise with the intended motif, colour and tone etc, I can sense the painting has acquired a sort of heartbeat, or life … and then it’s just a case of deciding when to stop.” A less measured approach – perhaps applying large blobs, flicks and random smears which have to be removed later if the effect doesn’t work or if a particular area needs something else put there – is not an option. Brian’s work is about time and the layering of experiences, and these ideas are undermined if unwanted paint is scraped off

Brian Neish is an abstract painter, born in 1962 in Derby. Neish has a diploma in art and education from Alfred University and after his studies, he became a teacher and taught in several English institutions. Brian Neish is fascinated by painted surfaces, particularly surfaces having to endure the extremes of sunlight, wind, frost and rain. He calls the appearance of these debilitating effects as noble decay to suggest a sense of them displaying increasingly unique visual qualities over extended periods. He never scrapes paint off, it’s all about the considered application of paint, one layer at a time and each series of treatments, conducted over many months, reveals surprising and unexpected moments. In the White Series, the focus is on the overlaying of white paint and seems to be a conversation between time and space. Neish’s pieces have a front and solid appearance, like the zoom of a more massive structure.
