Oil on canvas and mixed media, signed lower right. Michel Carlin naît en 1935. Encore enfant, en 1943, il se trouve pris sous les bombardements de Chambery (Savoie), sa ville de naissance. Terrifié, il aperçoit les premiers cadavres affreusement mutilés dans un paysage familier devenu apocalyptique. Avec le recul, Carlin écrira que c’est ce jour-là sans doute qu’il est devenu peintre. Il part pour Paris en 1954 ; sans ressource financière, il se réfugie à l’Académie de la Grande Chaumière où, des journées entières, il dessine les corps nus des modèles. Avec d’autres, il dort souvent « dans les chevalets » de l’Académie. Mobilisé (1955), l’artiste va se retrouver contre son gré au cœur d’une guerre d’Algérie qu’il n’accepte pas ; il y peint des corps mutilés et le charnier de Melouza. En 1960, Michel Carlin se lance dans la peinture de grandes compositions monochromes blanches, sans doute pour voiler les morts de sa mémoire. Au milieu des années 60, il participe aux deux premiers Festivals d’Arts Plastiques d’Antibes (Arp, Dubuffet, Matta, Olivier Debré, …). C’est la période où il se lie d’amitié avec le peintre Jean Villeri. En 1968, on lui propose de réanimer les ateliers créés par Albert Gleizes en 1923 ; il restera ainsi près de 8 ans à Moly-Sabata (Isère). Il fonde le groupe Structures-Espaces qui réunient peintres, sculpteurs et photographes. Michel Carlin expose, expositions personnelles et collectives se succèdent ; il participe à la Biennale Internationale de Céramique à Vallauris et à la première expérience collective de l’Atelier au Musée, au musée de Chambery. Michel Carlin vient s’installer dans le Var au milieu des années 70. A Cannes, à la Galerie Candela, où il rentre, il retrouve ses amis : Jean Villeri, André Villers, Franta, Prassinos, . . . Son retour à la figuration se fera en 1978, avec des corps momifiés. Il sera invité à la Biennale de Menton en 1980 auprès d’artistes tels que Miro, Tapies, Saura et d’autres encore. Homme d’atelier, acharné à peindre et à créer, jamais Carlin ne cessera de travailler. De très nombreuses expositions, en France comme à l’étranger, ont consacrés son art. L’artiste vit et travaille aujourd’hui à Callas (Var), où il s’est installé en 2001.
